Στις 30 Μαρτίου 1863(νέο ημερολόγιο)εκδόθηκε το Ψήφισμα της Β΄ των Ελλήνων Συνελεύσεως, το οποίο εξελέγει πανυγηρικά βασιλιά τον Πρίγκιπα Γουλιέλμο της Δανίας με το όνομα Γεώργιος Α’ των Ελλήνων.
Ο Γεώργιος, αφού επισκέφτηκε, το Σεπτέμβριο και τον Οκτώβριο, την Αγία Πετρούπολη, το Λονδίνο και το Παρίσι, έφτασε στον Πειραιά στις 30 Οκτωβρίου. Στην πρώτη διακήρυξή του προς τον Ελληνικό Λαό, διαβεβαίωνε ότι θα τηρήσει τους νόμους του κράτους και «προ πάντων το Σύνταγμα» και ότι θα επιδίωκε να γίνει η Ελλάδα «πρότυπον Βασιλείου εν τη Ανατολή».
On March 30, 1863, (new calendar) the Resolution of the Second Hellenic Assembly was issued, solemnly electing Prince William of Denmark as king with the name George I of the Hellenes.
George, after visiting Saint Petersburg, London and Paris in September and October, arrived in Piraeus on October 30. In his first proclamation to the Greek People, he assured that he would abide by the laws of the state and “above all the Constitution” and that he would strive to make Greece “a model Kingdom in the East”.
