This is a Motormouth couple car review of the 2021 Mazda CX-9 7-passenger SUV. The Mazda CX-9 is an SUV for moving people around but mazda does it differently than most by adding an almost premium interior plus a turbocharged 4-cylinder instead of a V6 engine. Powering the CX-9 mid-size utility is a 2.5L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with a 6-speed automatic transmission with 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque. This engine can run on regular gas but the power drops to 227 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. This 6 or 7-seater has a luxury feel with plenty of soft materials used throughout a quiet cabin. The Kuro trim we are testing has a Garnet Red leather trimmed interior with red stitching along with captains chairs. These chairs have sliding and reclining functions and are available one up from the base model for $300, although they come standard on this Kuro trim. Although this is not the biggest 7-seater in its class, the seats are comfortable and plush with plenty of room for a family. The CX-9 comes standard with a 7” touchscreen, black cloth heated front seats, 7 passenger seating, leather wrapped steering wheel and shifter, Apple Carplay and Android Auto and i-Activsense safety features. There is a lot of value just one up from the base model. It gets you the bigger 9” touchscreen, a power moonroof, leather trimmed upholstery, power rear liftgate, heated second row seats, one touch swtich for second row bench seat, available second row captains chairs with sliding and reclining function, heated steering wheel, keyless entry and paddle shifters. The GT trim, two up from the base model will get you ventilated front seats, front and rear parking sensors, a Bose sound system, wireless charger and wireless Apple Carplay.
You’ll find Nappa leather quilted seats with piping details on the Signature trim. One area I feel the CX-9 could see some improvement in is the Infotainment system. Although, I do like the centre console dial, the touchscreen is too far away from the driver. Keep in mind, this touchscreen can only be used when the car is not in motion. The new CX-30 Turbo, it no longer has a touchscreen. The US offers a 10.25” screen in this CX-9, you can only use the dial like in the CX-30 Turbo and I feel Canada needs this upgrade as well. Maybe next year we’ll see this change. the Mazda gets 11.6L/100km, 20 MPG city

We really enjoy our 2019 CX-9. Agree with you on the electronics. The gas mileage is underrated. We get 27/28 mpg on the hwy. One big miss for us was no memory mirrors. Overall, well built and reliable.

I love the way Andrea's eyes light up whenever she's driving a Mazda! I'm a Mazda fan girl too! I feel the same way! If Mazda would add a panoroof to the CX-9 and the CX-5, it would really be golden!

We did a lot of research and test drove a bunch of 3-row SUVs, and found the the '21 CX9 GT the best fit for us. We loved the quality of the materials, handling and gas mileage. We get 24+ in the city which is surprising for such a big AWD vehicle. I would have liked a 110 volt outlet like some of the other 3-row vehicles.

I really appreciate the effort that you guys take to do the ‘Night Life’ shots/edits. There are not enough nighttime pictures of car’s interiors. And its always great to see downtown Vancouver! I like this Mazda enough that I would short list it. The interior is paramount for me, as well as price (obviously). Thanks for another entertaining video review.

Traded in my 2021 Tiguan for the Carbon Edition CX9...yes the torque makes it so much fun to drive. Balance in turning is wonderful.

I just bought a Kuro yesterday. I love it. The missus bought an CX-30 last week. We love Mazda. In fact we traded in 2 Audi e-trons and we’re happy we did.

2021.5 CX-5 and CX-9 models are coming out in June. Infotainment has been updated to the 10.25" display that is available in US. It has the new Mazda Connect software that's in the Mazda 3 and CX-30 in Canada. No touchscreen or wireless Carplay.

When shopping for a three row my criteria was reliability and fuel economy. The CX-9 hits both targets and the added quietness and smooth ride are bonuses. We did an eight hour roundtrip and what an enjoyable drive. Averaged about 26 mpg at 80 mph. We only need the third row occasionally. I looked at the Traverse but the transmission issues and random electrical problems plus the start stop systems was a deal breaker. Plus the safety systems aren't available on lower trim levels like the CX-9.

People. I just drove a sport and touring CX9. I don’t need the space, but this thing drives so much better than the CX5. It really is night and day difference, plus it looks premium inside more so than the 5. It’s planted. The feel is so smooth. You put down the 3rd row and presto, more storage. This is a better buy than the 5. A Grand Touring 5 with Premium Package is 35k. A CX9 Sport is 36K. It’s a no brainer. IMO

I have one here in the US and love it, great tech package 10.25 inch screen is perfect and love Mazda connect. I've gotten so many compliments on this car and really love it when I find the Telluride owners staring at it!

Thank you for your excellent reviews and it’s great to have a local based review. It’s sometimes hard to find an accurate review online since models can vary with trim packages etc when comparing Canadian vs US models.

Keep up the great work!

The Mazda website has information about the EV CX-30. I hope the CX-5 is next. I'm with Andrea about the red seats. They are very elegant and rich looking. Such a great color that will look good with whatever you're wearing. Call me a Mazda fanboy!

My Friend has a CX-5 2013 I think, still driving it, and it has 325k km on it already. They are not giving that ute up yet ...so there you go with the long term reliability question :P

My wife and I just picked up a new '23 CX9 touring trim w/captains chairs & the sun roof. Managed like 5.1k off MSRP with it being an outgoing mode making room for the cx90.

Maybe I'm crazy, I MUCH prefer the look of the 9. That turbo V6 sure is tempting though😅

Mazda has really raised their game in the past few years. Mazda's have always been well built and "sporty", but now they are really moving into the "value luxury" segment, if that segment actually exists. The interiors are amazing, really nice places to sit and they have a real quality to them. I had a 2011 Mazda 3 and it was a great little car, super reliable as well. They need a full length sun roof and better infotainment system and that would make a great refresh. Seeing the CX-30, I can only wish for a future "CX-50" and a "CX-90". Great review as always!

We are shopping for a midsize SUV and currently drive a 2018 MAZDA6 Signature. Absolutely love that car! We cross shopped the Highlander, Pilot and even the Acura RDX with the CX-9. All the models we are looking at are within $1, 000 (US) of each other. My Mazda dealer is knocking it out of the park as far as discounting the OTD price when compared to the others. I think I may like the RDX slightly more but the price difference is around $3, 000…and it is not that much nicer. So it looks like there will be another Mazda in our garage soon. BTW Zac and Andrea, I love your reviews. It does help that you are so easy on the eyes Andrea…and Zac…you are a lucky man! Keep up the great work you 2! I look forward to the next review!
