It takes guts to try your own inventions.
Keep in mind he and others like him were trying to save lives by inventing the parachute and at some point it needs to be tested ..
From memory he'd had low level success from his home jumping off the third story roof so i can imagine him wanting to go higher.
I'm not related to him but he does have my respect, we wouldn't have the things we have today without guys like him.

I've been on the second level of the Eiffel tower (far bellow the top of the tower).
I don't know how to explain how far up it feels like you are and how brave this man must've been.
I doubt that he was in pain for very long.
Also visited mont Saint Michel and I can imagine the old French people must've been like we gonna take this rock and build castle in the sky hon hon hon.
