I Found Something in My New Gibson! | ES Supreme 3 Pickup Ebony Black

📚Description: The ES-line up of guitars isn't really known for their clean routes/construction - in fact, it is quite common to find wood slivers and specs floating around inside your new ES-335 etc, especially when you first unbox a new one. I'd like to give Gibson the benefit of the doubt that they do sweep them out before shipping them and the shipping process just works a few more lose, but this ES-Supreme arrived to me with a piece of wood so large, it actually has finish on it! It was a piece of the routed out F-hole! Gibson paints the guitar before cutting those out now. It was surely a fun find and a little piece of wood I'll keep since it illustrates ES construction quite beautifully showing the Maple/Poplar/Maple layers.

Your friendly former Gibson painter here Trog and.. there's some shenanigans. That piece was painted so that means it went through the entire prep process which requires those F holes to be stuffed with tissue paper before paint. Process would be sealed, preped ( scuff/finger board sides taped, F holes stuffed), painted, build coated and perhaps scuff sanded before it fell in. Then it would have went to repair to have that F hole touched up and then top coated and buffed. That's an odd one for sure. Great show as always sir.

That thin maple/poplar/maple combo was the secret to Ludwigs drums beautiful sound. The shell was thin and resonant. BUT due to the tension of a tuned drum, they had to have maple reinforcement rings on top and bottom of the shell interior to keep it in-round.
This recipe makes guitars or drums vibrate and resonate beautifully. Just listen to any recording from the last 80 years!!

I liked the dirty tone with the huge reverb at the end of the sound demo - awesome

You need to take a trip and visit the Gibson Garage one day if you ever get a chance. I think a tour of it would make a great video. If you do this year keep the seasons in mind . (The Weather). Have a good day.

PS. I am not a big fan of a double cut.

PS. Have you ever heard of a guitar with a rubber bridge, i think they can be put on acoustic guitars, but i am not sure. I don't know much about them.

I might be alone in this, but I actually like the chandelier design on the headstock.

I have had in the Netherlands ( and still have ) several Gibsons, Duesenberg and Heritage guitars and they are brilliant but with issues! Two years ago I bought a Eastman T59. no issues at all + amazing sound and play ability for a 3rd of what I have to pay for the Gibson! But am still a happy Gibson customer! (Sorry for my English).

I love this guitar. The defects shouldn't be there but a cleaning and touch up here and there would take care of it. Wouldn't bother me much. If I played a dozen gigs with it, the dent and scratch level would increase exponentially. Sounds great! Dirty bridge tone is "there", what else would anyone want?

I’m not an ES335 guy. I watched videos of the Gibson paint process. Too many guitars are sprayed in one day to take their time. It’s a big open room.

Not sure how that’s wired, but a lot of the time with the 3Vol setup you can get at the switch with the middle pickup on. You have to turn the middle off or on with the volume control.

It's always good that you can verify with you're vast expertise. the sandwich top on these guitars. but thanks to Gibson letting that little piece of the top fall inside the guitar? you have a little something to show the construction of these guitars. thanks Gibson, and thanks Trogly for your wealth of knowledge.

I had a piece of wood fall out of the F-hole on my new (to me) Schecter Corsair. The kicker? The guitar is 13 years old.

What a beautiful guitar. It’s a shame all the QC issues though. But we Gibson lovers have to live with that. BTW, the volume control for the middle pickup should work also for the rhythm and treble position, so you can blend the middle pickup with just the neck or the bridge. I own an SG 3 pickup with that same configuration and actually neck and middle pickups together is one of my favorite sounds ever! Great show as always!

Thank you for addressing the clear sprayed over the nut on their recent guitars. The new les paul modern I bought has that and it looked like a crack in the nut.

I have a 20/20 SG special. I have been fighting the treble pickup, it would cut in and out at odd times. I'd wiggle the switch around and eventually would start working again. The other day, I opened up the control cavity to see what was going on, and out fell a couple little chunks of wood just big enough to have been trapped in the switch occasionally and keeping it from even working. Lol.

They paint the guitar before cutting out the f holes now. Except on custom shop. Saw that this year on a video tour.

I'm a pickguard guy. I think blaming the pickguard for perceived imperfections is like blaming the pickups for holes in the body. Love your show.
