Love seeing new players realize the freedom and personal agency of D&D.

What an amazing group of friends playing D&D together. Hats off to whoever is making the shorts. They are great.

“well then you would’ve run into the cornfield!” 😂 I had the same thing when teaching my friends to play dnd. they were at a loss for what they were ‘supposed’ to be doing. it’s taken some time, but they eventually learned that they can be as chaotic as they want!

Something I’ve recognized with my group of newbies. They were so careful not to ‘ruin’ my ‘intricate storyline’ and did everything they thought went into my plans, especially in the first couple sessions. They’ve been breaking out of it a bit recently and I honestly love it

When I first started, I was very much in the "tabletop game" mindset of ttrpg and seemed to have forgotten the "roleplay" part. D&D is really more like an improvised story with guidelines on how to consistently tell it than a board game.
Also, as someone who's done online text rp once or twice, I might have accidentally nearly taken on the role of GM more times than I realize (I love describing stuff and setting up a scene to interact within)

In my first ever session of D&D, I was GMing for two of my friends (a veteran and a newbie), they were in an inn (of course) and they were in a fistfight (of course) and in second round of combat the newbie asked: "like.. can I just.. like.. piss on him?".... I spoiled my newbies by saying: "Well, you can hypotethically do anything, in theory."

Very well put, and it took me YEARS to figure that out, D&D wasn't common or well looked upon among my peers growing up, so not alot of opportunity or more often than not, campaigns starting then never meeting again so never having the chance. But I had 1 cousin of mine that continued to encourage my love of the game.

I found this page last night and I've only played D&D once years ago but y'all have reminded me how fun it is and wish I could find a cool DM here

One of my first games I was playing a pre made fighter, I love spellcasters though, so I wasn’t doing good in fights or really helping much until we got to the big bad and I had a thought. I took a turn to fashion my rope into a lasso and then next turn lassoed the big bad and started pulling him into an acid pit. That’s utility and creativity

YES! My group is awesome with that. as soon as we hit a town, we sleep and split up. personal stuff or even trying to find side quests with NPCs. I even did a 100% roleplay scene where my character decided to go to the beach while the others were shopping. My character was a wild elf who grew up in a tribe and she knew very little about cities and other people. Being in town stressed her out a bit so i had her go to the beach to sit by the water and casted a silence spell on herself to be in complete silence and meditate (Rogue Trance) and another player joined me because she thought it was a sick idea.

The DM went with it and had NPC's on the beach react to it. it was a nice scene to picture in my head.

#1 do what you'd like, that's always a great rule

I always like to throw #2 in of - do what you would believe you Character would do, it helps in becoming that character/acting like them

Yea so my players, on more than one occasion have looked for and found underground fighting rings once arriving in new cities, catch is they never existed till they started looking. So basically if you’ve got a DM willing, the whole world is your oyster.

Youtube shorts recommended me something I actually want to know more about... interested... I see too long didn't watch prologue recap from season 1, subscribed.

Those that see this please still remember that the saying “Don’t split the party” is there for a reason. Like sure sometimes splitting is fine and good but don’t go making your DM run four separate games simultaneously.

The rules that exist don't really set goals or define what you must do or must not do, as is common in most games. Rather, they are intended to describe the process by which different things are accomplished within their system, and how to determine the outcome of any given action. That's also why TTRPG rules tend to be massive tomes - they're trying to describe how you do different things, and that means there's a *_lot_* to cover.

“You have to make a decision…” Well that’s a fucking lie; my players spend literally hours to not make a decision…

My friends are awful at this they haven't yet made the connection where just about anything is possible they're all used to video games and regular stories so being in complete control confuses them
