The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton | Book vs Movie

Today I’m talking about The Outsiders, written by S.E. Hinton in 1967 and the two versions of the 1983 movie adaptation by Francis Ford Coppola, with an all-star cast, including Patrick Swayze, Matt Dillon, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, and Tom Cruise.

The story follows 14-year-old Ponyboy Curtis, as he deals with life as a “greaser”, a kid from the wrong side of the tracks. His parents died in a car accident, and he lives with his older brothers, Darry and Sodapop. His group of friends, including Two-Bit, Dally, Steve, and Johnny, are his surrogate family, and through his story, we understand that, regardless of our circumstances, most people are dealing with the same emotional challenges.

This is my favorite book of all time. And I prefer the full novel addition to the film adaptation. Even Rob Lowe said that it bugged him that his biggest scene was cut out, which was the scene when pony boy realizes Sodapop is the one to bring what's left of their family.

What makes The Outsiders really impressive is that it was written by a sixteen year old girl. S.E. Hinton was a tomboy and based a lot of the setting and greasers/socs from her own high school. In fact when she published The Outsiders while she was in college, the publisher suggested using her initials to not have male readers know the author’s a girl. However, as a male reader I thought it was strange how Ponyboy would call his brothers handsome. That’s kind of weird.

Someone needs to edit the complete novel with the theatrical cuts soundtrack. Then it’d be pretty much perfect

Wow just found your channel and did not realize there was a second movie for Outsiders. As a 53 year old woman - growing up The Outsiders was my favorite book ever and I remember when the movie was out in theaters. it was the only movie I felt that represented the book perfectly - but I guess I was thinking more how I thought the actors were all cast perfectly. I did not realize as a teenager how so much was cut out of the movie - I am definitely going to have to check out the new version. Thanks for the great video!

I never saw the Full novel movie but I saw the theatrical version, but they both are good, but I didn't care that the theatrical version was missing some parts. So both are like the same, just the full novel movie is longer.

The biggest ommission the movie made for me was right before the rumble. In the book, one of the greasers asked ponyboy who the big guy was, which was Darry. The greaser told ponyboy he thought they'd ask Darry to start the fireworks, and indeed they did. After a short meeting with some of the other head greasers Darry accepted the challenge. When the socs' showed up, Darry stepped forward and laid down the challenge that he'd take anybody on their side. After nobody jumped to the challenge immediately, paul finally stepped forward. Would have loved to hear Pony's narration of what he thought and felt about Darry and Paul. Anyway, it's a small part for most, but I always thought it shouldn't have been Paul speaking first and telling Darry, "I'll would take you."

Thank you for this video. I really enjoyed it. I only recently read the book. I saw the movie when it was originally released in theaters. Also I saw the original cut multiple multiple times on HBO and renting it on VHS and now I own the DVD. So, I have a LOT of nostalgia for the theatrical version. I recently saw the extended cut of the movie. And while it does fill in the gaps of the story, I just don't like it as much. I like the book a lot. I never was much of a reader, but, I can now see why people like the second cut of the movie. For me, I kind of like that everything isn't so fleshed out in the original cut. You don't need all the information. I like that there is a little mystery about some of these characters. The main point of the story is Stay Gold. So I don't really need all the other details. I think the original cut tugs at your heart strings a little more the way it was edited and put together.

I think Francis Ford Coppola made a mistake in making all the cuts that he did in the theatrical cut, and then when he corrected that mistake he made another big one by messing with the soundtrack. I have never watched a movie and so desperately wanted to change the soundtrack myself so badly. The entire soundtrack to the complete novel version was so atrocious and awful. In some scenes you can’t even hear what the characters are saying.

📚 Just finished reading "The Outsiders" by S.E. Hinton! 🌟 This classic novel dives deep into the struggles of the Greasers and Socs, highlighting the harsh realities of class conflict and the search for identity. 🤜🤛 With unforgettable characters and a powerful message, it’s a must-read for anyone who loves a compelling story. ✨ If you haven’t picked it up yet, I highly recommend it! #TheOutsiders #BookReview #MustRead #S.E.Hinton

If you get the chance, you may want to compare the musical version as well.

Idk what yall are on about, i like the complete novel sound track way better, even if some of it is a bit goofy. I think the new music adds more intensity to some scenes but thats just my opinion.

So the complete novel movie is the most similar to the book?
