I dreamed of having one of them when I found out they existed in Japan. My last front wheel drive Mazda was a 5 speed 1990 323 SE- this exact body style but with just a ho hum 1.6 SOHC engine. A fun economy car. I do wonder what they did to the chassis to make it handle the GTR power and all wheel drive. Had an RX7 and RX8 after that...

Back in the late '90s/ the year 2000 (Petter Solberg was driving for Subaru, but I think maybe Sainz was there and also Peugot 206s? Let me know if anyone can pin that down.), my brother and I followed the WRC rally cars for a weekend from stage to stage during the world rally event. Spectators would often get into convoys to follow the race, and a few times we drove with two Lancer Evos and a red Mazda Familia GTR. It had a - no kidding - 4 or 5 inch exhaust. It looked like a gutter downpipe, only bigger. To this day I have never seen a bigger exhaust... We were in a WRX STi Type-R. The Familia (Mazda 323) was crazy fast once it came on boost (which took a while to spool up), super loud, and it sat down on it's butt as it took off. But when it came to the corners and bends... The Evos and Sti could take the corners really tightly, and maintain speed, but the 323 would drift really wide and barely stay on the black... it would line up again and then rocket to the next corner. Absolutely wild. Definitely not as polished as the factory spec, rally influenced cars, but it must have been making huge power. I remember the intercooler on it barely fit the front of the car.

To this day I remember the smell of the kerosene from the rally cars when we drove behind them. They aren't supposed to break the local road laws, but when they were getting a bit late for checking in at the next stage, the pro drivers would floor it and tear off, occasionally going off-road at intersections to skip around the queues of cars also following the event. Japanese speedos used to stop at 180kph, (still do?) but we hit the end of the dial and kept accelerating a few times. A really awesome WRC weekend!
