In this episode Dr. Andrew Traver takes us into the very heart and genesis of the future Roman Emperor Tiberius Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus.

From exploring his childhood in a world of uncertainty to his coming of age in the early Roman Empire, this story covers a variety of topics from his personal ailments that caused him to be scorned and oftentimes mocked by family members to his love of researching and studying the past and beyond to him being noticed by Emperor Augustus as someone who may have more potential after all.

It is a sad story, it is filled with tragedy but it ends in triumph as we see political figures rise and fall and we approach the eventual triumph of Claudius to the very heart of the Roman Empire itself and the "Emperorship" that held it together. Emperor Claudius was the Emperor that ancient Rome needed and deserved.

I hear that some of his water system is still in use. I Claudius (by Robert Graves) is one of the best historical novels I’ve ever read, along with the sequel Claudius the God. He, being a historian, left marvelous records to work from.

Aww man this is so awesome, a window to the past. The "gods" really elevated Claudius. Lol. Lots of food for thought. Thanks.

Thanks. Our History Teacher told us tha Claudius had promised to make Livia a Godess at her request so she would'nt be punished in the after-life for her Crimes. She had asked Caligula first years before but he told her to "forget it" as she may have been responsible for most of the Julio-Claudian Family deaths, even her husband Augustus...poison figs still on the tree!

Excellent video. Credible. Also, I'm so glad you chose Charles Laughton's Claudius in the unfinished "I, Claudius" of 1937. It is a tragedy that it wasn't finished. It would have been one of the best epics ever. As good as Derek Jacobi was in the BBC production of 1976, Laughton is even better. He is so moving in this, changing from the figure of fun, the fearful and disabled one to a man of courage who cleaned up the corruption in Rome and become one of the best Emperors. It"s a great story. No wonder it attracted Robert Graves, Alexander Korda and the BBC. I understand that HBO wants to revive it. The 1937 I, Claudius can be seen on YT as "The Epic that Never Was".

Pondering his youth, he was oft quoted "as a squirt, I often dreamed ....of pretending to conquer Angelland"

If drooling and not being able to walk properly was a reason to expose babies at birth, it’s a wonder that there were any Romans at all

17:40 If Livilla had been locked in her bedroom without access to food, she did not starve herself to death, but rather, she was starved to death.

At 12 yrs old watched i, Claudius was thus a long-term admirer of his till I recently discovered he butchered a bunch of spectators at the coliseum over some petty issue. The guy was just a little less of a Maniac than the rest of them
