I have been using a sculpting tool for spreading texture paste lately. A bit harder to ruin than a brush as you can just wipe it off when you are done.

Very good tutorial. I could see the AK texture paste be substituted for Citadel's Stirling Mud (I have too many pots of that please send help) or a homemade thick texture paste thats been coloured brown but still thick enough to be shaped into the indents for the puddles.
