What is going on with RUIN Rules in 40k 10th ed?

A quick guide of how Ruins work and how to play their rules in Warhammer 40,000 10th edition has expanded into a long explanation on ruins and movement, shooting, line of sight and charging. This includes a discussion of the much hated ruin walls blocking charges, sometimes called un-interactive walls or walling off units.

11th edition: you're in the ruin, now roll on the homeslessness table.

You can't imagine the descussions we had about this on the table. Those were the days we only got to turn 3 max.

OK, this was so much clearer than the actual document. Thank you but I think I’m going to have to watch this video a few more times to actually understand the mess that is ruins.

I will never forget my first ever full army game of 40k 8th edition in my local GW. I had been told it was a good idea to set up my dreadnaught in a building out of line of sight, only for the other player to set up his tank on the top floor of some ruins, get a miniscule line of sight through the top of the Ruins, and immediately blow up the dreadnaught that, for all intents and purposes, I was told explicitly was hidden, which then exploded and took out the rest of my supporting infantry nearby. Causing me to be pretty much immediately tabled on turn 1.

Always funny to see Plunging Fire activate when targeting Aircraft.

Next mission pack will have a "The floor is lava, " modifier where you cant shoot unless you are in ruins.

I prefer the current ITC tournament rules, all windows are blocked. No shooting into or out of ruins, as a melee focused player it makes a huge difference being able to actually stage

A good description and visualization of how ruins work.
And, hopefully the flood of apologies doesn't ruin your inbox.

"Being in cover gives you +1 to your armor save to a maximum of 3+" is the way i've seen it written and makes the most sense

I feel so called out. All of my terrain is L shaped ruins cut from cardboard boxes. :<

The best way to think of it is like an RTS where you can garrison buildings. The building is solid and you can't shoot through, but once enemies are in the building you can shoot at the building they are in similar to if it were garrisoned. Also you have to commit to garrisoning the building and be fully in it. If you're partially in with a vehicle, then you get the downsides of garrisoning it (being seen and shot at more easily), but not the upsides of garrisoning it (being able to see and shoot things in eyesight of the building). If it is flying or a huge walker, you can see it OVER the building. So even though you can't see through the building, because they're so high you see them up above the building.

People insist on TLoS, but the reason players only use ruins is because it’s the only terrain feature that doesn’t use TLoS.

The uninteractive wall problem is from everyone not wanting windows on 1st floor. If ruins had windows, you just shoot the unit charge blocking. If you want to remain out of sight from shooting, you keep your unit on the opposite side of the ruins layout.

I agree with you being able to fight through a wall in maylay. I would also like to see a rule giving the unit behind the wall +1AP for being behind a wall.

I think you did a good job covering the rules for this, I can’t think of anything else off the top of my head.

One thing I think was probably worth mentioning though, is that it’s incredibly common to treat the ground floor windows as being blocked in. It’s not an official rule of course, but pretty much every tournament uses it, and even most of the people I play casually with

This game will be a lot easier when GW just gets rid of minis on the table entirely. It’ll help GWs profit margins too, all those minis have to be expensive to make. Better is just have people give you money for nothing.

Fantastic video. Thank you.

Also, there are only three Indiana Jones movies and they're great.

As usual awake some video learned a few mistakes my club has been playing. Also that 1” wall block is regularly played in my club and I hate it.

I think just being a good spot and shifting your models to let the other player charge you when you encounter this situation is probably going to go over well. I doubt anyone would complain about a few mm shift to allow players to complete an otherwise valid action.

If someone charge blocks me in a casual game, then I’m going to eat their model.
