As a Chinese, I don't think Americans are our enemies. But the US government's military presence around China makes us nervous. You say it's to protect "allies, " but China has never waged war against them. In fact, China was also a victim of aggression before. I don't understand why the US likes to interfere in other countries' internal affairs. The US always promotes itself as a "free and equal" country, but when it treats other countries, has the US been equal?

Thoroughly impressed with Ms. Russell. In 85' I also spent a year in China (6months Shanghai and 6months Chengdu) as a 24 y/o foreign medical student. It was a completely different much less affluent China with so much hope and anticipation with Deng XiaoPing at its helm. At the time there was an "electricity" in the air (now much cleaner) that I continue to experience to this day during my more than 20 subsequent visits. The growing US hostility and aggression towards China and its efforts to suppress its economic, technological and world wide influence is indeed disturbing. The US simply cannot accept the fact that a socialist country under the leadership of the CPC could ever succeed so quickly in transforming itself into the world's 2nd largest economy. Obnoxious exceptionalism blinds them to the fact that political systems other than a Western style liberal democracy could ever become such a formidable rival to their hegemony. So instead of peaceful coexistence, they have sought to demean, demonize, dehumanize and stigmatize China and all things Chinese. As an American, I am ashamed.

there are at any one time hundred of protests in China. if people are not happy with anything and they cannot resolve the issues with the local representatives, they will go to the protests. the thing is that these protests do have effect. The government does listen to them and if protests are valid, changes are being made.

The Chinese love peace and a comfortable life free from hunger. They never wish to invade or force their ideology upon others. If they are not to your liking, then you can please leave them alone. They are not a threat, never. Please, America, learn to respect that other peoples have different goals and aspirations. Not everyone aspires to become a "super rich and powerful American" who can bully other lesser human beings! Live and let live. We will all die eventually, hopefully with honor, charity and humility!

Appreciation to Mr. Scheer who attended an Asian American Journalists conference in San Francisco during the Wen Ho Lee affair. It was more than a coincidence that WHL was framed as a spy for China at the same time that Lockheed Martin was going for the contract for the WMD-88 nuclear multiple warhead contract. After almost a year in solitary confinement, WHL was released and received an apology from a federal judge. Lockheed got their contract.
