Is it not manky with hundreds of thousands of people's spit, lipstick, etc? Not that it really matters (to me) I suppose, I'm from Cork, so my attitude was always kind of "meh... sounds like a tourist trap to me."
Also, Cork people have a word for Purgatory* - "Like a wet Tuesday in Blarney"; apart from the castle it has 'SFA'. At least that _other_ tourist trap, Killarney, for all it's tackiness, has a bit of life to it. If you plan on visiting both places, go to Blarney first - it'll make Killarney look like Brüges, HaHa!
*When I say 'Cork People', I mean _this_ Cork person, 'yours truly'.
