In a nutshell: If you do not have & do not know how to build a proper business plan, this is the foundation of your business. Stop everything you are doing, and go learn this skill before proceeding. Any decent business startup workshop covering business plans& contracts will do you great.

Thank you so much for this video Brian!! Clients need to see the bigger picture than just the time a DJ spends at the event. Many DJ's need to see this video and re-evaluate the prices for DJ services.

Good Answer! I did a wedding earlier this year where the couple were very interested in the details of my expenses. They were both fresh out of college and were able to understand the math that I used for some rates and the logical chain that led me to amounts for other charges.

very good and stable answer I tried to give a very cost effective avenu for people getting married. I don't like to overcharge and rip them off but absolutely can't pull a band trailer full of gear and pay for 5 other people hardly anything because they decided to get married and wanna have a party. one key point also is after the party is over people usually don't like to pay make sure you get paid up-front usually have with a non-refundable retainer within 30 days of the event. so there might be a possibility to book something else. again very good answer

thanks to your old vid, reanalyzed my expenses including car expenses in meetings and my price went up almost $350 that I was not making. and so far no complaints from clients they all understand. and if they don't and one cheaper Maybe it's a good thing to say no or just say you're busy that weekend I always run into problems with events/clients like that. they want everything for nothing

I will honestly tell people this when they ask "well why does the guy down the street charge way less?"Look, if you want to hire somebody who is going to show up with equipment from Radio Shack and Walmart, be my guest and more than likely the quality and service will be terrible.  People need to hear the truth

Thanks Brian this is actually huge problem for me right now, because I am CHEAPER than most DJ's of my equipment and skill level in my area, but I continue to get well we are going to go with another guy due to price. The best I can hope for is that the other guy will suck and they will be crawling back to me.

good to see you do business the same way as me plus i never do mates rates i charhe the same to all clients even family as word could get out and it could create arguements between you and a potential client and they could bad mouth you to others and cost you work and thats not good for business all prices are fixed and covers everything from equipment costs, business and car insurence, petrol ect buy using the same plan as yourself and to be honest its nto ripping of the client its providing them with a fair price and 1 that gives you back the cost of all everything including profit but at a very fair price and i keepmy business plan with me when greeting clients for the first time and talk them through it which they never complain and appreciate that seing where there money is going and why it costs what it does and seeing the insurence also helps as most places ask for it anyway and im fully booked for the remainder of the year and have a lot of bookings for next year already where weddings and karaoke is concerned and im just greatfull for being abled to do what i do being disabled with fibromyalgia keep doing what you do brian we may be disabled but our disabilitywill never take away what we love to do in life

Brilliant video... I wish they would pay a correct amount here, never happens so my 25k worth of gear sits idle most of the time, the "laptop and one speaker" boys get the gigs. defies logic!
