A tool brand worth avoiding? AEG power tools 7 year review

In this video I am discussing AEG power tools in NZ and Australia after 7 years use (ridgid powertools brand) . AEG have some tools that I love, but also that I hate and wanted to take the time to have a quick overview of the tools whilst I discuss what I'm going to do next. These tools have all been purchased by myself, for use in the trades initially and now more so as a hobbyist maker /DIYer. There is always going to be a lot of discussion regarding powertools and especially brands on different battery platforms, and although I intend to move away from AEG and onto another platform, I'm not adverse to coming back if they release a tool that I need, but at this stage they seem to have gone dormant, at least from a hobbyis / DIYER perspective.

In this video I do a quick tool review on amongst others;
AEG Backpack sprayer ABS1858B
AEG 18ga Brushless Brad Nailer 18v A18FCN18GANZ0
AEG 18v worksite blower / inflator GM18EX2-0

There's more that have been since discontinued by AEG

Thank you for watching this video, let me know your thoughts in the comments below.

I'm also really embarrassed that i've done a clicky title, don't hate me

I have aeg inflator, line trimmer, 3 use drill, rotary hammer drill, chainsaw, 3 panel lamp, impact driver, grinder, multi tool etc etc. I cannot kill these bloody things no matter what I do to em. Some batteries over 9 years old and going strong. So no complaints here.

I’ve been on the AEG platform for about 2 years with about 20 building and landscaping tools and I’m really happy with them. I disagree with your thumbnail and would recommend ppl buy AEG.
I thought your break down was pretty good though. Some of those tools you have, that’ve been discontinued, have new improved versions. Like the impact driver now is excellent, with 3 speeds and 3 functions.
I haven’t used festool or high end brands to give a comparison, but I’ve used plenty of cheap tools and AEG are much better than any cheap tools. I’ve used other trade tools and I think AEG are on par with them. I also agree Mikita would probably be my next choice, but they are more expensive.
I’ve had one bad experience with the AEG framing nailer not having enough grunt for native timber, but after returning it a couple of times, Bunnings gave me a full refund. I’ve stuck with a compressor nailer. I don’t think battery nailers a as good yet.
If you look at AEG combo deals, and can wait for good redemption deals, their pricing is better than other trade brands.

Can you be clear about what AEG tools you were using? there are 3 different tool lines for different grade tools, that are targetted for different levels of use.

Handyman grade is their non brushless (Comparable with Ryobi, Milwaukee M12), Professional grade is Force (Comparable with Milwaukee M18), Construction grade is Fusion (Comparable with Makita XLR, Dewalt XR, Festools)

If you try to use their non brushless (cheapest of their range) to do anything besides handyman or home enthusiast, they will struggle. Buy the right tools for the job you need to use it for.

interesting... I'm about ( x years) behind you Sam, just starting on my DIY adventure. I've got a handful of tools - Makita Angle Grinder, couple of Ryobi sanders and other things, a Bosch (green 12v) drill - but recently I've needed better and newer power tools.... I'm a bit of a geek and so researched the shit out of it before I made my decision on the brand / battery platform ... and...

I went AEG - a) Ryobi has range but not the grunt or longevity (in talking to the Ryobi / AEG Sales rep) b) Milwaukee and Makita were too expensive c) deWalt was completely dissed by some pro tradie friends of mine as a jumped up Stanley.... and i didn't see anything better in the Bosch 18v with the reviews i read, and in fact the reviews (mostly USA) rate Ridgid highly...

So i went AEG because the battery platform has enough variation for what I need right now.... building decks, cutting and fixing timber under raised decking, I want to build some steps too.... So i bought the box with the Fusion 165mm circular saw, the impact driver and the hammer drill (220nm and 90nm) - all brushless.... spent the weekend using them and I have to say the quality is great and they do the job for me 100%.

already planning a few

i guess time will tell if the range is good and the longevity is there.

thanks for the review - from AKL!

I prefer my Aeg drill over my Makita, it just seems to do everything a little bit quicker with the extra power . It is still early days so can’t provide long term opinion .

Im and Electrcian and i bought my first AEG drill in 2005 back when they were blue and made in Germany, they havent changed the 18V battery connections and all the new batteries fit my old blue, i use it daily and it just keeps goung and goung! Ive also got a heap of Orange AEG and i never ever have a problem with any of them! Ny favourite is my Sub Compact driver because i am constantly working with my hands above my head.
Theyre absolutely fantastic tools!

Nice review. Just a note for Australia, we can also get AEG 18v and 58v ranges from tool shops here aswell. Also can order from AEG and they'll drive out to deliver the stuff. Bunnings is stocking less here though which sucks.

See that trash pile would be much larger with makita. Yes Sam this was boring and miss leading, if your talking about the framer you must of seen the 2 x 18v mitre saw.

We had an AEG washing machine that we used for around 18 years and nothing else ever came close neither in the actual washing performance nor in build quality. That thing, along with everything else that was old-school AEG was the pinaccle of Germanness. Is it possible to build them like that today? It mostly is save for the performance degradation due to EU's idiotic energy saving despotisms but planned obsolescence is a thing now, so...

Got 6 faulties. Angle grinder has a soft start board that has been bogged up with silicon. The MOSFET sticking out has blown. Today I do chemistry magic and invent a chemical that dissolves silicone so I can repair the board. Any generic ones for 18v you know of. Ali has the 220v boards.

wow... I've seen a lot of rigid tool reviews and wish we had them here in new zealand, so you're saying they're a direct rebrand? interesting

AEG is owned by Techtronic, the same company that owns milwakee.
That should answer most concerns you may have

Bit of a late commenter but hopefully some people see this. I've been using AEG for a long time now but only recently (a year ago) bought a full 18v kit and they are now turning into absolute garbage. Every chuck I've used on an aeg drill is garbage, their batteries already randomly fall out after less than a year of mild use, I've had led lights just stop working, battery terminals wearing through, gearboxes breaking amongst a bunch of other design flaws. Remember this is less than a year's use. DO NOT BUY AEG TO SAVE A COUPLE OF DOLLARS.

What a load of crap, I am a commercial pool plumber and have been using AEG for a decade and used daily at work . Never have a WEG power tool break and my hammer drill is 10 years old.

I've been Makita since day 1, and they have an awesome range. A few flops, and a few notable absences, but you get the feeling they are constantly innovating and releasing new gear. No regrets.
