WHAT IS SENSORY INTEGRATION THERAPY?

Children with cerebral palsy are born prematurely they might have sensory integrative dysfunction which means an abnormal degree of sensory processing. Sensory integration is a process by which children build and strengthen the connection within the brain that most young children develop through childhood experiences. Sensory Integration therapy aims to help children interpret sensory input, understand its relevance and respond. Especially to external stimuli that are often beyond their control. This sensory processing can be increased or decreased. The senses that are sometimes disordered in children are Auditory, olfactory, smell, oral, taste, proprioception, tactile or somatosensory, vestibular processing, vision.
A child's sensory processing is problematic if they are: 1. Over-responsive: Avoidance, caution, and fear.
2. Sensory seeking-Impulsiveand take risk,
3.Under-responsive- Withdrawn, passive and difficult to engage.
Who delivers it: Occupational therapist and physiotherapist.
Risk :
When a child begins sensory integration therapy he or she can receive too much sensory stimulation which can lead to reactions that could be disruptive, like wilfulness or frustrations. Hence parents, therapists & caregivers must monitor the child's reaction to counteract those reactions. All these situations can be mitigated when a trained OT implement a highly structured plan of intervention.
