PipingBairn performs a live solo bagpipe cover of Amazing Grace (a popular hymn in the USA) at the American Monument in Islay, Scotland.

We hope you enjoyed this live bagpipe performance and these stunning 4K shots of this Scottish landmark. The monument was constructed to commemorate the hundreds of American servicemen who were killed when two troop ships were lost off Islay in 1918. The monument was erected by the American Red Cross in 1920.

The S.S. Tuscania was torpedoed by a German U-boat en route from New Jersey to Britain with 2,000 USA soldiers on board. 200 USA servicemen and 60 British servicemen lost their lives.

Just over eight months later, H.M.S Otranto, sank off Machir Bay, north-western Islay, after a collision in fog. This time 431 troops died: 351 USA servicemen and 80 British crew.

The victims were buried in a military cemetery in Kilchoman, Islay. The USA victims were repatriated in 1920.

Brilliant! I let you here some information about this beautiful tune👇🏻

The song was written by one John Newton, an 18th century English slave trader who had a religious conversion and rejected his former trade. In Beyond the Hebrides, edited by Donald Fergusson, it is stated: "Since the melody is that of a bag-pipe tune and is a gapped-scale melody with a distinctly modal, plain-song character, it is very probably that Newton's composition was to an old Scottish melody. If not, early settlers may have adapted the lyrics to an old Scottish melody they brought with them." The words to "Amazing Grace" can be found in Olney Hymns (1779), a collection of Newton's hymns made in collaboration with William Cowper, however, the work contains no music and no tune direction was given.
