While these aren't super useful devices outside of their intended purpose, this came across my desk and I figured it would be interesting to take a look.

I'd be curious to know if anyone has repurposed one of these and what do you use it for? Let me know in the comments down below.

Similar to my old HP Mini 311. Because it is so slow, it is now a portable emulation machine. Parts still available online.

I can imagine some companies having charging cabinets full of them, that any employee could pick out, turn it on, it automatically connects to the company's network, then they just sign in and resume their desktop session!
(6:00) I've only ever seen that on Acer laptops, and didn't know that Wyse had them too! The design of the device itself reminds me of a certain Chinese ODM netbook from the early 2010s, with a mainboard or port layout reminiscent of the LG X120.

I've never seen a thin client in a laptop form factor before. The style of this machine looks very much like the Dell Inspiron Mini netbooks. I'm sure with some local storage and a lightweight OS this thing would have some use. I've had similarly specced Dell netbooks and they're pretty usable so long as you use older software and don't expect the world out of them.

I made a thin client into a streaming box. I should make a video about it sometime.

I still use Lenovo Netbook S10-S and Acer ZG5, both use N280 using windows xp for remoting linux server, and those laptop still able to do simple office with office 2010, and adobe photoshop and some acrobat editor, so yeah it works. decade old, windows become really bloat OS... XP only need 100mb to run simple OS yet nowdays 4gb isn't enough to run windows 10... sad.

anyway nice coverage!

The netbooks with Atom processors were kind of bad. I bought a Toshiba NB100 and it's fine for XP level software and below. Sadly, we got better computers so fast that they were more or less wasted goods. Mine still works and I cleaned it up inside, restored the keyboard and put an SSD in it. I need so many for experiments any way.

The Z520 can handle some tasks just fine. I'd recommend (to get the most out of the CPU) you install something like Lubuntu, or NTDev's Tiny 10. A used 60GB SSD will run you something in the neighborhood of maybe $15 (you can go used for something like this), and you can secure it will some sellotape or something to stop it from shaking around. The Z520 can handle 480p / up to possibly 720p on YouTube with h264ify, when you've got it configured right.

I've used a lot of WYSE thin clients at various office jobs, but I've never seen one in laptop form before.

I have one for work and I hate it with a passion of a thousand suns. Thankfully I can use my own PC for remote work.

FWIW, I have successfully set up a Xn0m as a general purpose computer using a lightweight Linux system. You can remove that bracket to make room for a regular SATA drive and I still use PCs with 2GB RAM to do all sorts, including office work, youtube playback and emulator games.

I've seen the Dell 24" thinclients that look like monitors out of this generation before, but short of running a chrome os or basic text linux install there is not much you can do with them.

These were well built, with quality screens. That half-slot is mini-PCIe for wifi as I recall. It should boot from USB, that's how the factory OS is easily re-installed. Don't recall if there was a USB boot setting in the bios, but pulsing the P key right after power-on should bring up a boot menu.

If you happen to have a good battery still, don't leave it in the laptop without the AC adapter being plugged in. It will run down in a day or two and once down to 0%, it's difficult to revive. Not impossible, but hit or miss, and not to be done with less than 90 or 120W adapter, because it will try to draw that much. Out of the laptop, the charged battery will store for months without losing much or any charge.
