There was this point in the movie when Phool said to Amma, " mai bhi kuch karungi ghar jaake, " as in regards to being financially independent. Phool was in love, so being with her husband was a choice, and rightfully so. But, there are plenty of women who are not exposed to the idea of being financially independent, the same happened with Phool too. When she received that money for her hard work from Amma, her expression showed a sign of satisfaction and empowerment and that was her window of being exposed to the world of financial independence. The idea behind was Phool had a love interest and the other girl did not, and while that was an absolute choice, I don't think the movie regarded financial independence as a choice. No, I am not looking down upon housewives at all, but to feel empowered as a housewife in our society is too complex and we do not live in a utopic world. Now, coming to the point of giving the choice, a lot of women, specifically from rural India are not exposed to the idea of finanical independence, and what it brings to the table, so, in my opinion, everyone should give financial independence a try and then decide what fits for them and their environment, as every woman, housewife or otherwise, has the right to feel empowered.

There are both good and bad choices, being financially independent vs being dependend on someone for money all your life, I don't need to tell anyone which one is better. Same goes for purdah system. Ye ghunghat, hijab, burqa sab bekar choices hain, its not even a choice for majority of women. The film rightly makes fun of these idiotic customs.

Am I the only one who found lapata ladies overrated???I felt they somehow wanted to connect the audience to the ground level but failed to do so.., it just didn’t seem authentic and seemed a bit fake, if u have seen panchayat u would relate with it cause they represented the characters in such a way like the broken teeth, the small details like uk mosquito nets in the terrace made with bamboo, it seemed like something that actually does happen in villages but this one casted people who were pretty and couldn’t speak in that particular accent and many other details but this is just my point of view feel free to disagree.
