The adjustable mics, four-track recording and extended battery life of the TASCAM DR-40 give you the flexibility you need to record tracks anywhere.

The DR-40 captures up to four tracks from built-in, high-quality condenser microphones, XLR mic or line inputs. The internal mics are adjustable from XY to AB position, helping you to tailor your recording to the sound of the room. A pair of great-sounding TASCAM microphone preamps welcome condenser microphones with phantom power, recording at up to 96kHz/24-bit resolution. It accommodates balanced XLR or 1/4" line inputs using locking Neutrik Combo jacks. The DR-40 accepts SD or SDHC cards up to 32GB, and a 2GB card is included.

Once recorded, play back your takes with EQ and the optional Level Align feature to avoid volume jumps. A stereo reverb effect is also built-in, as well as a speaker and chromatic tuner. Transfer recordings to computer using the USB 2.0 jack. Other features include overdub mode, variable speed playback, limiting and low cut filter, and much more -- all with TASCAM's simple-to-use interface. No other recorder makes home or live recording as simple as the TASCAM DR-40.

does anyone know if there is a good Video tutorial that runs though recording an acoustic guitar and vocals. I'm tired of hearing about Videographers and weddings. ...and a 1:51 minute video saying "It's great" doesn't cut it. Thanks

I would love to know if it is possible to set DIFFERENT recording levels using two different external mics? I was trying to record a singer (shotgun mic) playing through a guitar amp (SM 57 in front of the speaker), and couldn't figure out how to 1. separate the tracks and 2. Make the shotgun mic level a lot hotter vs. the guitar amp mic. THANKS & LET ME KNOW!

just purchased the Tascam dr40 to use with my rode ntg 2. doesn't not sound good at all. I don't think I have the settings right using the XLR input what should my settings be? Can someone help me

I have an omni lav mic from Giant squid audio lab, which requires mic input power, they say between 1 and 9V, typical of PC input power for mics. Would it work with the DR-40? I have the impression that it cannot power that type of mics as the Zoom H1 does for instance.

TASCAM, why can't you allow to format 32 GB cards into exFAT?

I am very annoyed with "Write error: timeout". It can happen about 3 times per one concert (both with manual and auto-switching to new file), also there can be several concerts in a row without this error.

My SD card is 32 GB Kingston (10 class), not counterfeit.

Even last firmware, version 2.12, made this error. Of course, i applied "erase format" before last broken recording.

So... if you allow users to manually select exFAT for any cards, there will be less reasons for timeout error!

The DR-40 cannot be charged via USB. It can only be powered via USB.

Look around youtube I am sure you'll have no trouble finding sound clips for this machine, but if you're serious about recording and you have a band you'll need to sit down with a manual and figure this all out. Recording is as much an art and a profession as it is being a musician. If you want to be a pro serious musician you'll have to know how to record and do it right. It takes a long time to get it right and no one will do it for you, except you. Get the tascam DP 24 and you'll be set.

Which should I choose for recording music with the built-in mics, the DR-40, the DR-44WL or the DR-100 MKII? Someone please help, I'm lost in hundreds of reviews and comparisons, none of them are about live music...
