At 93, my mother still rode her bike 5-7 km almost every day.

NZ chiming in. Yep. When it comes to weather we are spoilt. Come visit - Christmas on the beach with pavlova and ice cream. While we get snow down south, here in Auckland I've only heard it snowed here twice in my adult lifetime. And both weren't where I was and melted after 15 min. As a lawn mower guy I mow year round - mud's the biggest issue in winter not cold.

Driving on winter tires during summer would be stupid and illegal as well. First they get really soft over 7°C and would be gone very soon, second you have a much longer breaking range over 7°C and you would slide in corners. That's why it is illegal to drive on winter tires during summer. The rubber is specially designe for low temps, as well as summer tires are designed for warm temps.

Japanese here. We have two types of driver's licenses in Japan: 1 Automatic only license and 2 Manual license which allows you to drive both automatic and manual.

It is also quite normal everyday thing in Japan for elderly people to go around on bicycles.

Brits; most drive manual cars, not many use winter tyres, we use removable showers heads, over 70's riding bikes very uncommon (you have one Joe Biden),

You dont need winter tires. We have all season tires which are perfectly fine. Unless you live in the mountains, there are barely any weather conditions where you would actually need dedicated winter tires. Winter and summer tires are just a scam to force you to shell out an additional 1600€ for your car (or 800 if you allready have the wheels).
