Why You Should Study Medicine

If you pursue a career in medicine for the money, you’re in it for the wrong reasons. At least here in the U.K, the notion that doctors make tons of money is simply not true. In fact, a lot of the time medical students will need to take out massive loans in order to pay for the courses.

On top of that, medicine is an extremely demanding career choice. If you don’t have that drive and passion for it, it will be extremely difficult to keep up your motivation and work ethic for so long.

My best friend is in medical school and most of her classmates entered for the sake of money. She says you can tell who entered why based on how they treat the cadavers: those who fool around with the cadavers, jerking and tossing the limbs, etc, are in it for the $, because the students who actually care about their future patients treat the cadavers with sanctity and respect. It's not just a dead body, it used to house someone's soul.

My whole life has been about taking care of the people around me and I think that is part of why I want to go into healthcare. My grandfather's dream was for all of his grandchildren to become a doctor just like him, but only my older brother had the grades to actually get applied for medical school. After he passed I was the only grandchild who hadn't gotten into a path of careers, mainly due to most of my teenage life revolving around narcotics. Now after being sober for three years and getting my grades up, I applied for nursing school. I am the only one of his grandchildren who had worked or is going to work in healthcare. Might not have fulfilled his dream of us becoming a doctor, but I think he will be proud that he'll be getting a nurse. So this is also a tribute to him <3

Doctors always say there are “way better jobs for making a lot of money” for “less work” but I have yet to hear one of them actually give me an example of one of these jobs. Average salary for an attending doctor in America is about 300k starting. It would be extremely difficult to find a job that works significantly less hours starts at that compensation level. You could say investment bankers or software engineers (though they do not typically start at 300k) but these professions work nearly as many hours as newly minted attendings, if not more. I had a friend who went to Merrill Lynch out of college and was working 90+ hours a week for a 100k salary (including bonus). This sort of commitment is pretty typical for anyone starting out in a high laying field.

I honestly want to get in to make sure nobody else is mistreated by their doctor like my late mother was for her cancer. The oncologist disregarded her needs. Also i also don’t want people to suffer and to help them live as best as they could with all my power.

I'm a Neurosurgery registrar, final exam next January - most people think Neurosurgery is one of the best ways to make money in medicine. While that's mostly true, I know many Neurosurgeons who make an obscene amount of money, almost all of them would agree that there are easier ways to get even richer. We are constantly working. The defeats are crushing. I live with my 5 year old son and I barely spend time with him because when I'm not working, I'm irritable and exhausted. I'm on call again tomorrow and I'd love to get some sleep but I have to study until 2-3 because there are grand rounds on tomorrow and the spotlight will be on me. If anyone would be willing to go through this purely for money I want you to know this would be the most foolish decision of your life bar none

PS don't do it because you think you love people either. People are often horrible selfish unworthy villains at the best of times and as a doctor you'll usually encounter them at low points in their lives so don't expect much better

Rightly said!! The reason why my aim is to pursue medical is I think that you can be genuinely happy if you're healthy both physically and mentally so I wish to help people get healthy so that they can be stress-free from any health issues and try to be happy:)

In a fact, So many of my people love to be rich. They care about the future this is what they will tell you. Studying medicine is hard, but they always think about the money they will get and they do not care about the patients. And they do a deal with the pharmacist to make money for both of them. Lastly, there are some people who really love to study medicine and care about the patients health.

If you're trying to get in med school because of money, just don't. There are 100 ways and jobs that will allow you to earn more money with less effort. Med school is very, very demanding and once you get in, you're just starting a decade of constant learning and work in order to become a doctor and specialise in certain field of medicine. It's long and it's demanding, and a will to get rich won't be enough to push you through it. Not to mention that you probably won't earn as much as you'd think.

This was me years back... I always wanted to become a doctor, but then I realized the only thing that attracts me to medicine is "money" not the patients. So now, I'm studying finance which is all about money... education, work, and salary in finance are related to high income. AND bankers also help this world and people by managing their wealth.

I joined medical school because I thought it’s fun and enjoyable from what I have seen in the media and people were faking about medicine
Now I don’t like it, but I can’t leave it since i am in the 4th grade. But I plan to leave medicine as soon as I graduate. It’s stressful as hell even if your hard worker
And medicine the only department that require every skills.

And that’s all because some people faking their life as been happy doctors on the media.

In My opinion there Will always be something That eventually interests u or you find some sort of satisfaction in, even in Medicine. Just give it time. Any field is boring at some points.. I agree u shouldnt study medicine for the Cash, but its a fact that doctors earn A LOT of money (atleast where i live).
All in All I think u should give medicine a try, dont doubt urself, itll probably interest u. Just like everyone else .

It's like how most people do software engineering for the money but end up depressed for the rest of their life

Truely blending knowledge with care cannot be judge from 1 angle but there's so much depthness to it, the beauty of medical is reliving the ethics of humanism every single day .
That was an important message, thank you nasir, GOD bless you.

In my country education for good students is free, but amount of med students is pretty low compared to those who have chosen to study IT, law or economics. That's because everybody knows that the biggest med university here has one of the highest corruption levels in the country and salaries in medical field are horribly low. Also, after finishing a med uni, where you have to pay in order to have good grades, you will work with sick and nervous patients in old buildings (that require reparation) with veeery old and cheap med tools and appliances in order to get a salary that can barely help you to get food and pay your bills. So, med students here are technically studying to become volunteers. Huge respect to them
