I hope this video will help visitors finding their way easly in one of the most important sights in Istanbul and the world. I shot the footage in Hagia Sophia Istanbul in April 2019. The Hagia Sophia Museum was quite empty. Normally there will be always a long line on the ticket office. Also, to pass the security check takes time. That means it will be not that easy to enter the Ayasofya, like i did :)

"Please open the SUBTITLES and concentrate on the HISTORY and ART of this almost 1500 year old masterpiece. THANK YOU"

The Hagia Sophia is one of the most important Byzantine structures. It is the biggest church constructed by the East Roman Empire in Istanbul. When Justinian and Theodora ruled in Constantinople the previous church on the same place was demolished 532, after the public riot (Nika revolts) that took place during the reign of Emperor Justinianos.

After the revolt Justinian built the Megale Ekklesia (Big Church) again between 532 and 537 (5 years 11 months) and the church was referred as the Hagia Sophia (Holy Wisdom).

The building was later converted by Mehmet the Conqueror (Fatih Sultan Mehmet) into an Ottoman mosque after the Conquest of Constantinople. The minarets designed and implemented by Mimar Sinan (2 of them) have also served to this purpose.

The Hagia Sophia became a museum in 1935.

Hagia Sophia Ticket: Since July 2019, 72,00 Lira

The destruction of the mosaics, and icons due to the plastering over by the Ottomans is heartbreaking. The Church was filled with them, there were alot more.

totally amazing: a language kin to Korean and Mongolian, is spoken in Europe amidst all the Greek and Roman monuments, columns and buildings--by a people who too are nearly fully European!! History is strange for sure. BTW/ excellent video!

There have been many legends, true or false, about Hagia Sophia. All from
the cosmic situation of its location to internal details are based on legends.
The perspiring column, the healing well, one of the doors made from Noah’s
ark, the symbol of ‘Holy Grail’, and Hermes symbols are only some part of
the legends. Nevertheless, none of the legends are as great as Hagia Sophia.
Indeed, it is the legend itself.

The moment Mehmet The Conqueror entered the city, he unwillingly showed
his personality. Deeply influenced by the city’s glory, he immediately asked
Rum and Frank bishops to learn the founders’ emperors of the city as well
as the timeline. In the meantime, he made scholars to translate the books in
Hagia Sophia to Turkish. At the end of the middle ages, Sultan was interested
in ancient philosophy, but what is he looking for?

Being the first public church in the Christian Roman Empire as well as the
first main chapel in the Christian world, Hagia Sophia has been evoking
admiration since then. The book tells the unique journey of Hagia Sophia.

It looks so much better with the marble floor; now, being carpeted, you can't appreciate much of the beauty of this building. I hope a future government will turn it into a museum again.
