Baroque cellos have four or five strings, you can see in the videos on our channel both kinds, as well as the viola da gamba, which has six or seven strings. An original cello is not necessarily better than a modern copy, but it has lots of layers in the sound from age. Not all baroque cellos sound good, but the best ones are amazing. The original five string cello in this recording is actually rarer than a Strad, very few of the five string ones survive in original condition.

Original instruments have such a gutsy sound--It wasn't meant to be a pun.

Wow... it sounds much lighter and richer than modern instruments

oh, that's interesting. i heard that baroque cellos don't have an end-pin and have 7 strings. so, with those and a light frog makes it much harder to play, i guess? does replica sound very much different with the originals?

well, it's baroque era, which had a more light sound. my teacher owns a baroque bow, and it doesn't have a heavy frog at the end, so it was really physically impossible for the musicians NOT play lightly. I'm actually wondering if the players in this recording used some sort of replica of the older instruments...

perchè non hai pubblicato anche la seconda e la terza parte del concerto?te lo dico perche è un vero peccato...l'opera è meravigilosa soprattutto suonata con questi strumenti

Doesn't Yo Yo Ma play a 5-string on one of the unaccompanied Bach suites?

“One of the finest...”? Are there any other double cello concertos?
