How do schools of fish swim in harmony? How do the tiny cells in your brain give rise to the complex thoughts, memories, and consciousness that are you? Oddly enough, those questions have the same general answer. Nathan S. Jacobs explains the concept of emergence, the spontaneous creation of sophisticated behaviors and functions from large groups of simple elements.

Lesson by Nathan S. Jacobs, animation by TED-Ed.

This video was way cooler than I expected

This video changed my view on the world. The most complex of things can be based on just a few simple rules.

Brilliantly explained the concept of emergent systems, chaos and patterns.

This is kind of trippy, and in a way answers the question of "who am I?" I'm just a pattern of neurological emergence...

The lack of the jingle at the end is surprisingly upsetting.

the branch of biology that studies the complex interactions between individual systems is known as system biology!

The giving of an name to a phenomenon that we don't understand does not explain that phenomenon. To say, "It's emergence" is to say absolutely nothing. Saying that it happens explains nothing. In some ways, the very thing that most of these theories prove is what they do not want to prove, i.e., that consciousness does not required a brain and/or that consciousness operates as a field (see Rupert Sheldrakes work).

Since a school of fish are behaving in a complex manner, can a school be considered an organism?
Can society be considered an organism made of individual humans?
Can society get infected? For example with corruption? Political correctness? Self righteousness?

He said that individual fish follow 2 rules - stay close and keep swimming. This does not explain changes in a school's direction.

Question: Is there a way to determine whether a complex emergent behavior will happen by analysing the set local rules that the elements follow? Not asking about what the behavior will be, just whether it will be significantly more complex than the behavior of a single element.

04:20 that's exactly what happens in the case of Dementia, many parts of the brain's neurons inhibate from recieving or sending signals. Some say that studying and mental activities can delay the onset of Dementia now I understand how

Crazy how even after like a decade TED-Ed videos still feel roughly the same. Just goes to show how good these were for their time
