I purchase 100% wool sweaters second hand near the end of the season for .50 - $I.00 each. My wife, kids and I unravel them and gently wash the yarn in mild soap. And make our own. We get 7-10 balls from 1 Lg men’s sweater. Last year we made 25 balls for gifts for less than $2.00!
love wool dryer balls but hate the price of the retail ones and find wool yarn more pricey than I like. This is a great option for our family.

I had to order roving as nobody local had it. I got ends and leftovers which are very cheap and all colors. You have to use a felting needle and take care as they are extremely sharp. A pretty and creative gift.

Yours is the best video on this topic!  If you use a bar of glycerin soap, your hands will be soft when you're done, too :))

Felting is best finished in the washing machine with very hot water. There are little velcro like strips in the wool which grip together if the water is hot enough. Also put the in a nylon stocking and tie a knot between each ball. When you take them out of the stocking they will be permanently felted

I put mine in a nylon sock and run it through the wash with clothes then toss them in the dryer. Easier

the word is circumference lol i mix them up often and my husband delights in letting me have it so i thought i would pass on the love...lol if you try drafting the roving out it will make thinner layers of wool web almost and felt tighter and faster promise ... loved your video thanks

Very interesting and useful, Tracy! Do you air dry them after you make them and before you use them?

I've tried this multiple times and I don't know what I'm doing wrong. It won't felt up where the wool comes together at the bottom. It just keeps falling apart. :(

Do the balls come out better hand washed or from the washer? I put my mine in washer and they came out good but when I put them in dryer they immediately became fuzzy blue (from jeans) and not very smooth looking anymore. What did I do wrong?

How much does it cost per ball to make? Thanks!

How do you make them smooth? Mine always turn out with "fluffies" around them

Thank you for the great video. I want to make playtime wool balls for my dog (want to make sure the soap is completely gone). How much time do you spend rinsing the wool balls? 5 minutes? 10 minutes? How many times do you change the water during rinsing? Is the rinse water hot, or warm, or lukewarm, or cool, or cold? I have a big bag of 100% wool quilt batting (NEVER USED). Its color is natural. I will experiment with this bag of wool.

When you finish shaping them, do you dry them in the dryer or let them air dry?

Anyone know how to do this from raw wool? By raw I mean straight from the sheep.

I have not been able to find the wool...where did you buy yours

Think you must mean 9 - 11cm not inches!

I want to take a bunch of dog hair and turn it into an approximate 4" diameter ball for the dogs to play catch with. Probably safer than those moth ball smelling made in china tennis balls. Can I get some input on how to do this?
