Photographers around the world are awaiting news of the eagerly anticipated Canon R1, and with so many Canon EOS R1 rumours around but no confirmed news, I thought it would be a good idea to take an initial run through of what I think we can expect from Canon’s next flagship body.

Of course, we are some way of knowing what the Canon R1 specs will be, but given the timescales involved, it’s going to have to have some pretty impressive features to keep up with the competition.

As a sports photographer, I have long been a fan of Canon cameras and their DSLR bodies. With the dawn of the mirrorless camera era, Canon released their most impressive mirrorless body to date last year, the Canon R3, but it’s the R1 that is anticipated to be the next body that will make a real impact on the market.

So, let’s take a look what when we think the Canon R1 release date will be and just how much will the Canon R1 cost?

As a current 1D X owner (the first version from 2012) I am not too excited about the prospect of having tons of megapixels. The R3 actually has all that I want from a mirrorless camera, but even the R3 would not bring me a lot of advantages compared to the 1D X. I hardly ever take photos of human, cars or animals and I do not need video at all. It seems we arrived at the point where camera for people who shoot stuff like architecture do not get better any more. That is good news, because it means that the photos I take today will still meet tomorrow's quality standards.

Looking forward to the R1. Have held off getting mirrorless body. But the R1 could be the deciding factor.

Canon will do what they did when they cancelled the 1D and 1DS lines, merging them into the 1DX. The R1 will be announced before the 2024 olympics and signal the end of their pro D/SLR line. The 1DX mkiii is almost guaranteed the last pro non mirrorless from canon.

Have my Canon 1dx Mark iii and Nikon Z9 cameras. Interested in seeing what the Canon 1dx Mark iii Mirrorless camera version will be like.

Nice vid -- but what and when is going to be close hold for a while. Unlike Nikon, Canon is not betting the farm on one new camera -- but for pro-shooter's (canon's backbone) - pro sports and action - the R1 is important and it has a big hill to climb. Canon and Nikon has done very well in matching and in many ways succeeding Sony's success in mirrorless. Fuji and OM1 are certainly no slouches - but not seen on the pro-circuit. As a Z9 shooter, I want Canon to do well and I want the R1 to do well -- healthy competition is good - it drives all brands to do better. I doubt Canon shooters are losing out today. Given the R3 - what do pro-shooters want/need the R1 to do -- really it only has resolution, video and performance, and AF of course.
It is simply stupid to ram ever more MP in the 35mm sensor sized body -- diffraction being the first issue AND who would want to deliver 80+mp files to an agency mid game?
IN terms of technology -- I will be interested to see if the R1 follows the Z9 and goes shutterless.

Keep an eye in Qatar for R1 bodies ( 2-3 max) to be tested. That's from a reliable source I have in the UK ( sports/football photographer)
