Dev here! Wanna say that is not canon. Thomas could be considered to be inside the game, but only figuratively. He is obsessed with what he has made, but he is not inside minecraft, he watches from beyond as a god would.

The giant crafting table has the purpose to craft greater things. A normal crafting table couldn't.

Edit: I've seen people talk about the limiter part. That is kind of an oversimplification. Thomas did not just remove a limiter that was already there. He programmed himself infinite possibilities at crafting by procedural algorithms, and as such the table could produce any result. He later added entities to that result array.
