A better way to 'switch synths and plugins off' is right-click on a channel strip, in the dropdown that appears, choose go to 'Track Header Components', Enable On/Off. Press and hold the alt key, and then switch off the power button on your channel strip. This DISABLES the whole track, and helps your computer process all the remaining audio much faster. :)
