I always state it, "Absence of evidence is evidence of absence if the expected evidence is absent."

" a truth absence of evidence is an irrelevance" is it pretty good quote

The animated series called "Boondocks" covered this satirically.

I would say that absence of evidence is evidence of absence. It isn't proof of absence, but it is evidence.

I wonder why TMM's subs count don't increase substantially even though he consistently produces high quality content

Absence of evidence isn't evidence of absence but it can certainly be dismissed when it is used as the justification to dictate who is and who is not allowed to have human rights.

So,
When there's an absence
of all evidence
the claim is at best
an irrelevance.

Good. That should be quite handy for the necessary short form communications required now. Thanks TMM

Another one is "You can't prove a negative". You totally can, just ask a mathematician.

Absence of evidence may not technically be evidence of absence, but it is an absence of any reason to believe the claim.

Absence of evidence may not always be evidence of absence, but in the case of deities, it at least makes a strong suggestion for the absence of said beings.

Oh, and if a giraffe in the garage doesn't work, you can always try an insubstantial dragon!

Your videos always take me down paths of thought I otherwise wouldn't generally go down. What kind of evidence might we expect and from which kinds of gods would we expect which types of evidence? It's a question often overlooked. People usually jump into the same old same old stuck in a rut discussion points.

Absence of evidence means belief in the claim is unwarranted.

As Richard Dawkins says "we act like a-teapot ists" even though in reality we are "agnos-teapots"

The 'absence of evidence' for Polar bears living in the Serengeti, Kenya, is pretty overwhelming. Penguins are also thought to be thin on the ground around there. The Christians are the ones asserting similar nonsense, let them provide the evidence for their carpenter God, who also created the universe in 6 days. As Hitchens said: "They have all their work ahead of them".

As an archaeologist, I am very familiar with this line of reasoning.
Our evidence is inevitably limited by preservation processes, which are fickle and unpredictable and spotty at best. However, context can usually establish whether a given phenomenon is to be reasonably expected.

So, given the context of the ancient world, it is very unreasonable to assume that a ufo is parked in the suburbs of Atlantis, . .

the biggest problem with "absence of evidence" mantra is the old and new testament proclaimed miracles by believers as signs or evidence of faith and the faithful. Because the bible is specific on what should be seen then yes, an absence of evidence equates to evidence of absence. If the bible did not make these promises or clearly said there wouldn't be miraculous evidences then that would be different

Strictly speaking, absence of evidence _is_ evidence of absence. It's just that the strength of the evidence of absence depends heavily on how likely we would be to find the positive evidence given that the claim is true. Still, it follows immediately from Bayes' law that absence of evidence is evidence of absence.
