Lyle and Erik Menendez are serving life sentences without parole, convicted of murder in connection with the deaths of their parents. At the time, they claimed SA and threats from their father forced them into the act. But now, in the wake of a Netflix documentary Monsters and a prison visit from Kim Kardashian, the DA is looking at new evidence. Are things about to change for the Menendez brothers -- 35 years after they first went to prison?

Tonight I'm joined by Judge and Professor Chong Kim. Born in Busan, South Korea, she immigrated to the U.S. in 1973. She earned her BA in History from the University of Georgia in 1988 and her JD from Washington and Lee University in 1992. After 25 years in criminal defense, she became a judge in 2020 and served as Special Master for the State Bar in 2018. She also teaches public policy at a local university.

Judge Kim was recognized as one of NAPABA’s “40 Under 40” in 2002 and named a “Rising Star.”

Wow, when she mentions the mother, and how she could have been charged with willful blindness. This is the exact charge Jennifer Soto should be charged with.

Sad story all around. I don’t think they are a danger to the public. Time served 🤷🏻‍♀️

Such a sad case I remember well. Set those grown men free! They have served their time and have not had any sort of life imo. I feel sad for both of them. Their second trial was so unfair. Fantastic guest from Judge Kim! Thank you for covering this Lawyer Lee!😘❤️

If Gypsy Rose Blanchard has been released, I think the Menendez brothers need to be released. Their dad was a monster. NOT THEM!!

I saw the trial and those boys were not putting on an act!The murder was horrible but they have been locked up for almost 35 years! They already have a life sentence by the abuse they suffered.People believe that the therapy will just make the horror go away.Therapy helps but the fact is, it never leaves you entirely, ever.

Fear is the strongest emotion. The brothers were afraid of repercussions from their parents.

Their testimony was so confronting. Obviously being truthful in my opinion.
They were tortured

I remember being a young kid and my mom making crude comments about the accusations of SA made by the boys. She laughed at them and had no sympathy which, even at such a young age, i found disgusting.

I watched the trial testimony 30+ years later and i found them very convincing tbh.

I thought the judge ruled in the second trial that SA was not allowed as a defence by the boys, absolute appalling judging even at that time, I was shocked about the ruling then and just as shocked that this has been allowed to go on this long, shame.

My son used to live near a male prison and he knew a guard. They were discussing the background of the prisoners. He stated that stats were showing that males were abused and the level of sexual abuse was unknown for male prisoners. The guard stated that every male in that prison had been sexually abused as children.

As a therapist working with chemical dependency it's known that 70% of chemically dependent women have been sexually abused as children.

We don't know the information for males. They are socialized that they can't be in pain, they aren't allowed to be afraid and they are not allowed to cry. That load makes it even worse for male victims, who also get the "Don't Tell" message as female victims do.

We had an abusive father-stepfather. It was not as bad as the Menendez family. But, it has caused damage for 50 years. The damage spans generations.
Horrible. I still want to die.
