In communication, the message, idea, feelings, thoughts, facts, and values are sent from one person to another.
Communication: Functions
1. Control employee behavior
2. Employee motivation
3. Helps everyone to become aware of other people’s emotions
4. Provides information that helps managers to identify issues, find alternatives and make decisions
Communication: Process
1. Sender – The one who wish to convey the message
2. Encoding – Converting the thought
3. Message – Physical product
4. Channel – Transmitting medium
5. Receiver – The target audience of the message
6. Decoding – Deriving the meaning in the message
7. Noise – Barriers
8. Feedback – Receiver’s response
Organizational Communication
Organizational communication is the process where information flows from one to another within a specific environment in the organization.
Organizational Communication is contextual and helps to achieve both individual and organizational goals.
Types of Organizational Communication
1. Downward communication – Information flows from high to lower authorities
2. Upward communication – Information flows from low to higher authorities
3. Lateral communication – Information flows between the same level
4. Electronic communication – Information flows through electronic means
5. Informal communication – Information flows via rumors and grapevine
Barriers to Communication
1. Messages are filtered in a way to project the sender favourably
2. The receiver has selective perception and puts the onus on specific aspects
3. The receiver is overburdened with information
4. Language barriers prevent the receiver from understanding the message
5. Physical barriers like noise, distance, etc.
6. Personal barriers like values, lack of listening skills, and human emotions
