When I was a kid, I thought the Germans put those there to give the allies cover so as to make the battle more fair and gentlemenly. lol

My grandfather said he believed that he, or most of the invasion force, would not have made it all the up the beach if it wasn't for the cover these provided.
Sadly he said it wasn't the obstacle itself that gave the real cover, but the stack of bodies of the first soldiers who thought hiding behind the obstacles would give protection against machine guns and mortars.
There behind the bodies, some not all the way dead, were the best fighting positions on the beach and a lot of accurate suppressive fire on the mg nests wound up coming from there.

This will forever be my favorite WWII battle. just the shear bravery these gentlemen faced is just unfathomable. Most of them teenagers and young men. They deserve honor and the upmost respect.

In addition, many of the Teller mines used were rendered inoperable due to saltwater corrosion to their fuses. Some had been rigged to be remote detonated by observing defenders, and many too were intended to be contact detonated. But the leads and sensitive internal components had not been properly insulated against continued exposure to seawater.

Did you know in the film 'Saving Private Ryan' the wooden poles were placed round the wrong way...the high point towards the sea and they only had time to put a few the correct way before filming
Edit: thankyou and yes I am subscribed 😊

Czech hedgehogs were not designed to rip a hole in landing craft but to stop tanks. It was designed in 30s to stop German invasion into Czechoslovakia. But we're sold by west to Germany.

The beach obstacles were not secret. They forced the Allies to land at low tide, farther back, leaving the soldiers to a long slog that was very vulnerable.

Crazy it happened "in Saving Private Ryan" and not just "in the war for real" lol

There’s two parts to this. The Germans knew if they came ashore during high tide these defensive devices would have been hugely important. But the Germans also knew that if the Allies landed during Low tide it would double, or triple the run up the beach, making it a massacre with there perfectly placed MG’s.
So the Germans actually took both into account.

Wow the more I learn about D-Day the more I am convinced that the Allies had all the stars aligned to their favor.

The allies "barely" gained a foothold.... they nearly lost vs old men, infirm and conscripts.... people have no clue how close we were to losing

They didn't expect them to land at high tide. They wanted to make landing more difficult at that location. Either 1) land at high tide and the hedgehogs will do their damage or 2) land at low tide and increase landing forces exposure to defensive firing positions.

So understanding nature and using it's rythms in war enabled the Allies to take that beach.

Sometimes, timing is everything.
