It’s the most important one in the series for me. I watched my Grandmother play FF1 but FF2(IV) on SNES is what began it all for me at age 11. I was without biological parents, without a steady male figure to look up to. To my 11 year old mind in need of that, Cecil played that role for me. I looked up to his character, I wanted to be like him, I wanted to have a father like him. When FF Chronicles released in 2001 and I learned that Cecil’s last name was also Harvey, it blew my mind. Lol. Was poetic and quite the coincidence to me that the character I spent my childhood admiring as a father like figure, carried my last name.

All of the characters have redemption arcs. The theme of this game was redemption.

This game is also an unknowable roller coaster for a first time play through and one of the best games to come back to every few years…I was thinking about it and not only is it a perfect length and wonderful pacing but I think it actually might be the most fun final fantasy with no dull moments nor lulls - it’s at a constant go yet the intensity isn’t overwhelming or jarring like it becomes in, let’s say for example, ff16 which has some pacing/structural issues with it’s sidequest - granted, ff4 doesn’t have a ton of sidequest, the half a dozen or dozen it has are all a part of that enjoyable journey and you constantly feel like you’re on an important adventure

This game always takes me back to my childhood! Still better than most things on TV!

I play this game once a year since I got my copy in like 98-99ish. It’s been with me since I was seven years old. I played it when I was a kid, a teen, a college student, downrange in deployments, played it during my kids baby years, had them play and I spent way too much to get a physical copy for the switch. I LOVE FFIV

Just type this, so some younger audience understands this why this game had a very huge impact during the 90ies:

The only game around that i would consider a good JRPG during the 90ies was Phantasy Star II on the sega genesis/megadrive, really good ending and for this one it will remain a timless game, but i don't remember any side quests there, too. Guess that was not a thing back in the days. Phantasy Star II released in NA and Europe in 1990, while FF IV came out in 1991, it surpassed Phantasy Star II easily. Think thats the reasion why FFIV was so big, there was no game like it around at the time. Its not like you could choose between FFIV, V, VI, VII, and so on, Suikoden Series, later Phantasy Star IV. FF IV was the gold standard in old school JRPGS for a quite a while, until FF VI came out years later, V was not very story and character rich, unfortunately and not released outside of Japan.

Thanks for this shortie, FFIV deserves more praise on YT for sure!
