It happens because the initial set up is not tight, and the volume of the square is made up by the gaps between the pieces and the frame.

There is space but it is slim rectangular, to rearrange then convert to square.❤

It happens because the space to fit all of the pieces is around just one square more than the rest, so this is why we could place the square piece

This puzzle is the same trick to get "infinite" chocolate: between the two first pieces there's a gap that has exactly the same area of the square, so unfortunately we can't make infinite chocolate because it's just an illusion😵‍💫🧐

The bigger diagram is a quadrilateral and not a triangle.

"Can you fit the little square without changing the area?" NO! And it is impossible. Neither the initial nor end shape are true triangles. The hypotenuse of the initial setup bends inward slightly. The hypotenuse of the end "solution" bends outward slightly.. Ergo, you added to its area.
