A new vision for death and dying | The Lancet Commission on the Value of Death

The story of dying in the 21st century is a story of paradox. Covid-19 has meant people have died the ultimate medicalised deaths, often alone in hospitals with little communication with their families. But in other settings, including in some lower income countries, many people remain undertreated, dying of preventable conditions and without access to basic pain relief. The unbalanced and contradictory picture of death and dying is the basis for the Lancet Commission on the Value of Death. Drawing on multidisciplinary perspectives from around the globe, the Commissioners argue that death and life are bound together: without death there would be no life. The Commission proposes a new vision for death and dying, with greater community involvement alongside health and social care services, and increased bereavement support.

Really a matter of immense concern and thinking. Death could be made peaceful, instead of an ordeal of pain and despair. Dying in an intensive care has become a routine these days.

I do anticipate we will see a lot more untimely deaths in the next few years, but a bit suspicious to put out a promotional video normalizing it.

I’m all for palliative care and compassionate care . They are trying to stop that and replace it by euthanasia . This is horrible

Many Medical Profession are not aware of Palliative care and a lot misconceptions exists. They need to be over viewed .

Doctors and medical staff needs to educate patient family about outcome of treatment. So they can make a call.I don’t think it’s happening .

Most of Palliative care and end of life can be done at comfort of home with familiar surroundings of patient and family than being in the hospital.

Data on any hospitals - where patient are kept for more 10 days . Look at care plan for these patients .Maintenance care are only done . Can’t these type of patient under go maintenance care at home.
