You should do your research on these two phones because if you did you would know LG's always on display is way better then Samsung's implementation. LG's always on display works with all apps while Samsung's only works with their own apps.

Seriously who thought of a always on display on an IPS LCD panel.. I wish lg g5 was OLED or AMOLED

Who cares about different clocks and pictures, the S7 implementation only shows notifications for Samsung apps where the G5 shows notifications for 3rd party apps. Being able to see more at a glance is the point.

LG G5 works better because it shows you all kind of notifications. The side and the brightness has a reason...the battery, and the side covers the minimun of the screen so do not remove a lot of battery. Only the S7 note has useful options. You were talking only to your linking.

Why do people keep saying the s7 is brighter than the G5?theyve already confirmed it has a maximum brightness of 850 knits

Amoled automatically wins.... power consumption is the key... and LG ruined the G5 for MANY, from design, to UI, to sheer gimmicks

correction: I DON'T get a pop up message nor icon on display always on.

If only g5 would use a super amoled display too, it could be the best of 2016.

Nice job on this video, maybe next time though you could mention something about the actual usability of the feature instead of focusing on brightness and being able to change clocks.

unless I am wrong because idk, but if lg made an update where you not only get your app drawer back but also be able to brighten/dim your always on display to your liking that would be nice. I know a lot of ppl say you can download an app drawer app, but it would be nice to have the option already of normal app drawer or no app drawer. and also have other fonts and styles for the time and such. but again just my opinion.

TBH, Lg has absolutely ruined the G series with this awful design. The G4 looked so great and it also had that subtle curve like the G flex which was so comfortable to hold. The G5 has become what the s5 was for samsung.

Is always ON display the same technology seen in old Nokia lumia phones, known as 'glance screen'?

For me the LG V10 probably had the best implementation of the 3. While the 2nd screen is physically on the same LCD panel as the main screen its using separate backlight electronics so the primary screen isn't turned on like the G5 while also offering more control than the S7 such as music controls and full notification information rather than just telling me I have an email (I have 996 unread at the moment so that won't really work for me but I may be an oddball). Just my 2c.

lg always on display displays notification of all aps but the s7 displays only notifocation of their own app like messaging but if you use apps like hangout you will not be able to see a notification from it on the s7 but you can on the g5

And in a nutshell this video captures the reason I avoid PhoneArena's extremely biased reviews. The Samsung implementation IS brighter. But there is no doubt it offers more options for clocks. That is good. But nothing beats being able to receive notifications for apps such as GMail, Hangouts, or other third party apps, which Samsung's version explicitly does not do. You cannot deny that is a weakness, John V. Finally, your comment about the screen technology for the LG G5 variant is incorrect. To quote from elsewhere:

"LG's taken some lessons from the V10's secondary screen, adapting the separated backlight waveguide to direct light to the center of the IPS LCD display even when the phone's display is asleep. The always-on display also features its own driver IC memory and power supply, which stops the phone from having to wake the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor to handle the minor task of delivering the time and notifications in black-and-white to the display."

How does that affect that battery then? The SGS7 looks great, but it may eat a lot more battery.

i was expecting about battery consumption between the two, because it's really interesting for an LCD unit to have this feature.
and i think it's one of the most important factor, LCD vs OLED.
(yes i know LG G5 is still in production model)

Who cares about the always on. The LG G5 is in a league by itself. All the other smartphone makers will follow LG's lead as they did with the LG G3. Thx for posting.

Important point you forgot to mention, the Galaxy S7 always on display only works with Samsung stock apps not 3rd party apps. The LG G5 always on display works with 3rd party apps so you able to view all notifications.

love the S7 but I use Google Hangouts for messaging and I get pop up notification on always on display. I just get a blinking light. I don't even get a pop up notification with the display always on is deactivated, kind of annoying considering Samsung uses nothing but Google OS, why the hell would you not allow pop up notifications for a proprietary app?
