Gentle Giant - Peel The Paint (Official Video)
Taken from the 1972 album 'Three Friends'

Directed by Noah Shulman
Artwork by Matthew Lanci
Additional Animation by Ronald Rabideau

Lyrics:
Free from the start
Left to depart
Finding the pleasure and the pain in his art
Lost in the hush
No need to rush
Time waits for him, him who creates with the brush
Colour the brush

High in the air
His dreams are there
Searching for answers he will look everywhere
Thinks he has won
A place in the sun
Free from the worries and the ways of everyone
Colour the brush

Peel the paint
Look underneath
You'll see the same, the same old savage beast
Strip the coats
The coats of time
And find mad eyes and see those sharpened teeth
Nothing's been learned
No nothing at all
Don't be fooled, get up before you fall

Carnal grave
Crawling smooth
Open flesh and you must let him in
Glass reflects
What you are
It shows the face, the evil face of sin
Nothing's been learned
No nothing at all
Don't be fooled, get up before you fall

Nothing's been learned
No nothing at all
Don't be fooled, get up before you fall

I like how half of the song is just the unique drum/guitar solo. And for those who didn't notice, the video was animated and directed by Noah Shulman, Derek's son.

I've listened to these guys for 48 years, and I believe they are the most talented, innovative, eclectic, and versatile musicians you'll ever hear.

I am proud I have recognized the immense greatness of this band more than 50 years ago! 😊

The interplay between Gary Green's guitar and Malcolm Mortimore's drumming on this track is the stuff of legend.

One of my favorite bands. Seen them 3 times 1976-77 so fin.

I think my favourite bit is when Gary Green switches on the huge reverb about half way through his solo. You can hear the "click" of him stomping on whatever unit he was using. What gratifies me the most is the fact that they must of heard the noise in the control room and in the mixing etc. etc. but they left it in!! Genius. Best band ever.

I owned the "Three Friends" album during my last year in Junior High School in 1972.
I would listen to it repeatedly.
Pretty heady stuff to be listening to for a fourteen year old!

Actually saw them open for the Strawbs in the mid 70’s at Berkeley. Best band that night! 😎

@emobile => I even saw them at least 3 times in Hamburg. My absolute favorite "Prog"-Band. It's even them, I'd say, that were more progressif than others. Let's light a candle for RAY, ok ?

Imagine if Gentle Giant had done a side long epic. That would've been nuts.

who knew in 1972 that we would be enjoying this timeless work of art in the 21st century set to a cool art video?! always got a charge out of Derek's shout, low in the mix, at about 6:01

Three Friends is a 1972 release, not 1977 as shown.
