GOAT BLOAT 👇🏼

We came home to one of our “OG Goats” (aka one of the 6 goats who started our herd back in 2018) with bloat. It is a favorite… Prissy! 💔💔💔

Bloat in goats is over-distension of the rumen (rumen is the largest of a goat’s 4 stomach chambers) with gases of fermentation. Think indigestion but if untreated can be fatal. 😓

What were the signs? She was lying down under the deck (where Sarge 🐾 usually sleeps) which is abnormal… and she was extremely bloated on the left side — the left side of a goat’s stomach is almost entirely made up of their rumen… and she wasn’t eating… a telltale something is wrong!

My silly phrase I use to help me remember which side of the stomach is which is… LUNCH on the LEFT & RUNTS on the RIGHT! 🤓

^^ this helps me know that when the left side is overly bloated, we might have an issue… and when the right side looks big, the babies are growing!

SO we treated her immediately and got her up and walking to help her body / tummy process and by evening, she was seeming a little better. ❤️‍🩹 We will continue to keep a close eye on her today.

In SIX YEARS this is our first experience with bloat!

My mom and I have talked recently about how hard it will be when we lose our older, original does 🐐 who have been with us for 6+ years. 😭

For now, we will treat symptoms as they come about and enjoy every day we get with our herd!

AND enjoy memories like THIS video when we had baby goats sprinting and hopping around in every direction! ❤️ This is our happy place!
