When I was a kid, I used NSS as a model for good CW practice. Yet I've never heard the station calling CQ before! A typical NSS transmission used to go: "VVV VVV VVV QRA QRA QRA DE NSS NSS NSS WM WM WM VVV VVV VVV ..." The WM stands for Washington Marine. ) I grew up in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, so NSS and WWV were my neighbors. (WWV moved to Colorado in the early 1960s, if I recall correctly. Used to be in Burtonsville, MD.)
