The hardest lesson I've learned, after being a filmmaker for over 20 years, is that no one really cares about you, your ideas, or your films. Unless you are a pre-established name in the business, you will have an exceptionally hard time getting anywhere. It's a very tightly-knit world and it's VERY difficult for new filmmakers with new ideas to ever make a dent. You either have to already come from money, have family in the business (i.e. give your daddy a script and he turns your terrible spoof film into a reality, starring Leslie Nielsen), or get lucky enough to meet someone in the business. I hate to be the Debbie Downer here but it's the cold, hard truth. This is why I stopped caring and started doing it simply for the love of making movies.

Holy freakin’ COW! Ryan, if I could like this video twice I would. I am gonna add it to a motivational playlist, cuz you struck many chords with your words. Thanks for being YOU and for helping the Film Riot community with all you do. I’ve had that MusicBed challenge on my mind for quite a while now, and now I’m gonna enter it (regardless of how my video will turn out🙃) thanks to this video. Keep on keeping on!

I'm currently using my career in nursing to help fund and setup my life in order to do my actual passion; filmmaking!
I actually would love to go to film school but for right now I'm jotting down ideas for stories and practicing camerawork. I love this channel and cannot wait to start this journey soon.

Thanks for sharing your honest perspective. You’re a major inspiration for a lot of filmmakers including myself. 🙌

Sounds very much like when I was an actor in New York. You get so many, "NO's" you start to take it personally. Especially when, like you said, you are pouring your heart and soul out at auditions, . To the point of how many "No's" can you take before you just go off and do it yourself or give up. I definitely fee you on that one. I agree. Just keep creating the things that you love and want to create. Remember, everything has it's audience, even if it's not where you thought you'd find them.

I’m also nervous about collaboration with other filmmakers lol. I guess this is a sign to branch out and work with some people!

Working as a freelance/contract filmmaker, it is very difficult sometimes to balance the what ifs and how to mentality. But I have watched you guys since the beginning, and you have taught me to just get out there and shoot. To all of the Film Riot team, thank you. Thank you for everything. You will always have me as a fan.

Also, if youre looking for more hires, I am available!

That last answer is what keeps us creating- not easy, as you said, but we must keep doing what we love. Thanks so much, Ryan for sharing your thoughts 🙏

Lotta great advice in this one and loved the Jurassic park break down too! Please do more analysis, I think you have an interesting practical approach to story structure that is somewhat refreshing when a lot of the story structure analysis on YouTube can be overly heady and complicated.

Ryan that ending question about creative rehabilitation was one of the most inspiring things you've ever said! And that means a lot cause most things you say are inspiring

Thank you on this... I have had my channel for over 10 years and still have NO following... but I do it for myself! I can see an improvement from when I started to now... So you last comment hit home for me!

All it takes is one YES. I was extremely frustrated pitching over and over again. I kept changing up the way i presented my content but it ultimately came down to the content itself. I kept going and it taught me a lot until i finally got my first yes and got a meager budget to shoot a web-series. At the end of the day, i think you are an impressive filmmaker with tons of talent. Keep pushing! We believe in you!

Been learning from you guys for ages now, you've literally helped me and a lot of us grow in this field, and I can't thank all of you at Film Riot enough for how much you guys do. Your words are not only encouraging to us but they also show us the difficult parts and how to overcome them if we face the same situations which actually does a lot, more than anyone might think. So, Thank you.

Ryan, I've been following you all from the beginning, since the Revision3 days. You all are such an inspiration and doing great work! With the Youtube era of filmmakers, you all have cemented a place in the culture and have influenced so many people! You should definitely be proud of that. Thanks for all the years of creative goodness and keep it up!
