Joe and Mario Duplantier's mom passed away after a year-long battle fighting cancer, during the recording of Magma. Their loss inspired the spiritual direction that Gojira take on the album and is even reflected in its title track "Magma". "Magma actually refers to the lava when it is still in a volcano, it's the blood of the Earth at the point where it is boiling and ready to explode, " Joe Duplantier explained to The Independent. "We put the sun on the cover to symbolically represent the big bang, the source of life. Not only that, but if you remove the 'g' from Magma it spells Mama and we see the 'g' as a representation of Gojira."

So this was my first Gojira album. I knew nothing about the band before purchasing this on a recommendation and playing it.

Gojira is definitely moving in a more melodic direction with this album. That sound they got in the intro to Esoteric Surgery and The Axe and other songs (where the guitar picks really fast in sync with the double bass) wasn't in this album, and that is one my favorite things they did musically, but I can't complain really. This album kicks ass in its own way and like I said, it's definitely more melodic and emotional. They also experimented and used a lot more clean vocals in this album, but I like it. GOJIRA!!!
