India actually qualified for football world Cup 1950 but they rejected it.
At that time there were only 16 teams. India used to defeat teams like australia and iran but govt didn't focussed on football.

In the 1950s, India had the best football team in Asia and would always compete in the Summer Olympics. They even qualified to compete in the 1950 World Cup in Brazil. However, the Indian Football Federation was shocked when they learned that the trip to Brazil was almost 15, 000 kilometers and would cost a lot of money. Despite many Indian states making donations, the Federation had to decide whether it was worth spending money on a trip to the World Cup or wait for the 1952 Helsinki Summer Olympics. Just ten days before the World Cup, they sent a letter to FIFA saying that they would not be coming and decided to wait for the Olympics.
