EDIT: While I think his "cutting off the roots of my family tree" line can definitely be applied to immigration and assimilation, he's specifically referring to the Holocaust. It's a rather forgiving way to describe what happened, too. "That's not the way to be." This is reinforced when he says "gas tried to choke, but it couldn't choke me".

The song is a reference to the 137th Psalm in the Hebrew Bible. For context, the Hebrew people find themselves in exile in Babylon after the destruction of the temple. The speaker asks, "How can we sing the songs of the Lord / while in a foreign land? / If I forget you, Jerusalem, / may my right hand forget its skill. / May my tongue cling to the roof of my mouth / if I do not remember you, / if I do not consider Jerusalem / my highest joy." I think that's where he's pulling the "fire not gonna come from me tongue" and "let my right hand forget what it's supposed to do" lines from. The song explores anti-Jewish persecutions [gas, ovens refer to Nazi Germany] and likens Jewish people's sense of "Where is home? Where do I belong?" in the midst of these oppressions to that Babylonian exile from the Bible, and the hope of a return to Jerusalem.

Interesting comment by the female half of the reaction, “she likes how he has a reggae influence to his rapping”. Matisyahu is of the reggae genre and for this song more specifically, is influenced by a style of reggae called dancehall. Also, the lyrics “aint nothing gonna break my stride, nobody gonna hold me down” are from an 80’s song by Mathew Wilder...Glad to see a reaction to a reggae artist, niceness!
