The name "Parga" is likely of Slavic origin, adding another layer of cultural richness to this multi-faceted gem. 🏖️🌍
In its early days, Parga stood strong in turbulent times. In 1320, Nicholas Orsini, Despot of Epirus, tried to offer the town and its sugarcane profits to Venice in exchange for military support – but fate had other plans. 🎭🛡️ Later, during the Epirote Rebellion of 1338/39, Parga stood loyal to the Byzantine Emperor, proud and unshaken. In the 1390s, it came under John Spata of Arta, but the people of Parga craved freedom. When Vonko’s rule became too harsh, they rose up, overthrew him, and turned to Venice, which graciously took them under its wing in 1401. 🏰⚔️🇮🇹
