A part of one’s heart should always be preserved for one’s connection with the divine. As much as one may deeply love another person—whether that person is one’s spouse, child, parent, brother, sister, grandparent, or friend—such love will never completely fulfill one’s heart’s longing for that certain something which cannot be found in this world or in another person. Love between two individuals is a beautiful, magical, and powerful thing, but because of the aforementioned it is crucial that each individual still maintain some degree of solitude to “be alone with God.” There is a place hidden in the deepest corner of each heart that is reserved for God—for the divine love that only He can offer, which is unconditional, boundless, flawless, and eternal. This love transcends human limitations and offers security and acceptance. Contrary to human love, which may be influenced by circumstances or behavior, divine love is steadfast and unwavering.
I have tied the concept of divine love to my interpretation of the poem, “Never Give All the Heart,” by the Irish poet, dramatist, and writer William Butler Yeats (1865-1939), which I have shared with you today. (See below for the full text of the poem.) While this poem seems to transmit the message that love is not worth the heartbreak and trouble, I have taken it one step further by saying that the reason human love leads to heartbreak is often due to a lack of openness to divine love within the individual which is a necessary foundation for any strong and true earthly love. It is my hope that my interpretation of this poem will influence you to seek divine love before and in conjunction with all other forms of love. ♥️
Never give all the heart, for love
Will hardly seem worth thinking of
To passionate women if it seem
Certain, and they never dream
That it fades out from kiss to kiss;
For everything that’s lovely is
But a brief dreamy kind delight.
O never give the heart outright,
For they, for all smooth lips can say,
Have given their hearts up to the play
And who could play it well enough
If deaf and dumb and blind with love?
He that made this knows all the cost,
For he gave all his heart and lost.
