Martin Crowe was a superb player who scored a lot of runs in Australia. He averaged 68 in the 8 tests he played in Australia. I still remember his 188 in the game where Hadlee got 9-52 in the first innings in Brisbane in 1985.

Why do people in the comments need to ask why aren’t players selected. This is just a personal choice, there is no right or wrong answer.

Damien: Great piece! Perfect selections and perfect rankings. The TOP TWO, Richard and Tendulkar, are unquestionable. A CUT ABOVE THE REST, even.

Sensible ranking. Vivian was greatest of his era and moreover in cricketing world. Man, what a brave player he was. He only can play hook shot on 150kmph without helmet.

VVS Laxman had 3 good series in 1999-2000, 2003-04, 2007-08. Expected Kallis and De Villiers with couple of series wins.

Viv Perhaps the best ever batsman to have played the game. The amount of time he used to have playing the very fast bowlers like Lillee, Thommo, Pascoe, Hogg etc was just out of this world. ❤

Amongst all those great batsmen Sachin played theee different generations of Australian bowlers and returned the best average. Winning depends a lot on the overall balance of the team and India mostly had weak teams touring downunder those days which I think makes his achievements even better.

And Sanghakara these are the all time best performances in Australia tour. Love your Top 5. Your fan from India 🇮🇳 ❤

India almost won the 2007-08 BGT Series in Australia with Sachin scoring 496 runs in 4 matches had it been a fair umpiring in the Sydney test. But Benson and Bucknor acted like 12th and 13th man respectively for the Australians😅😅

Slick recording Flemmo. Great recording quality. So good watching Day 2 from the Bradman Stand.

what about gavaskar who played against thompson, lillie, mcdermott and merv and still managed to average 51 and that as an opener and infact as an asian batsman which at that time were considered to be not the ones who would play fast bowling at ease and that too in 70s and 80 s

What I think Viv had that no other batsman ever has is that he actually intimated the bowlers.

Great list Damien. VVS and Michael Vaughan too have been very good down under.

Pretty good selection. I'd probably have Martin Crowe in place of Pietersen, and maybe Gavaskar instead of Kohli but close call.

Sir Viv is without a doubt the greatest ever.

On current form, Kohli wouldn’t even be in the top 15 BUT if you look at the past tours, Kohli might even be No.1. Tendulkar, KP absolutely because of the confidence and aggro he brought with him, as a batsman. Richards would also make it on my list. The last one I would pick would be Sangakkara as I saw him hit a huge 100 against a very good pace attack, all this with absolute class and time to place his shot. The rest of his teammates were falling like ninepins ! I’m also surprised why VVS is not on this list but then you would have e too many Indians 😅! So, Richards, Tendulkar, Kohli, Pietersen, and Sangakkara would make my list !

1. Sachin Tendulkar
2. Sir Vivian Richards
3. Virat Kohli
4. Brian Lara
5. Jacques Kallis

As a pom, I love KP but Cook was the most pivotal player for us in those series win in Oz and India. We don't win either without him and still haven't replaced him.

I remember watching King Viv scored 291 against England at the Kennington Oval in 1976 this when i started playing cricket in the London streets wearing a morron cap when it was my time to bat

Hi Damien. Still remember your 5 for 36 in 1996 WC against Indian in Mumbai.
Where do you keep VVS Laxman in this list?
