I think what Tim Mackie is saying is that what he is referring to as “hell” can be created by humans in the sense that it is simply a world without God. These people that choose to live in a world without God are essentially creating a hell for themselves. Hell in this case doesn’t mean eternal torture in a flaming pit, but rather just the absence of God for eternity

Not being in a relationship with Yahweh for an eternity is a dignity? How is justice served by that?

Thank you for this video! I watched the Bible projects original video and you’re correct, the Bible project is way off about hell. And that’s the most important thing to not get wrong!!!!

Sustained by mercy and Grace… How can hell be a place of mercy and Grace if it’s separation from God?

This is totally taken out of context. Mackie like Heiser is a biblical theologian who studied scripture in its original context( Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek) NOT IN ENGLISH OR IN OUR MODERN DAY! Ppl tend to read scrip in their own worldview. It was written in ancient times not in our centuries! Thus it must be read in its true context . The 1st and 2nd temple Jewish period. Written TO those ppl. They understood. We in the west have twisted it and continue to cherry pick scriptures to fit into our personal worldview. I, too, am guilty of this. Please try to read it in its true context. It is so enlightening!

1:27 a misunderstanding of the text does not lead you to hell, you seem very knowledgeable about the word, but you also just seem upset. I appreciate your effort to criticize and correct but too say that soft teaching is a deciding factor in salvation is incorrect. All God wants is our belief in Him and our acceptance of Jesus. It’s good to know the rest of scripture so you can grow and nurture your relationship with God but misunderstanding or being confused doesn’t take away your salvation

I think people would be greatly mistaken to believe that Jesus was born of a virgin, lived a perfect, sinless life, then was beaten and brutally murdered in order to save us from 'the dignity of a life without Him'.

God's plan did not originally have a hell. That is true. But then Satan and the fall happened and God had to create a hell for the devil and fallen angels. God never intended for humans to go there. But alas, many will go there willingly. Tim Mackie does say there are two options. Either God will say to you your will be done or you will have said to God your whole life, God your will be done.

I have noticed as a new Christian There is no church I've ever visited that talks about Hell punishment how to avoid it repentance And parts of the gospel that teach all about this they just teach nice things Community stuff Where is the right church that teaches everything and also about revelations everything you're not going to answer ! But I still get good info here

This doesn’t make one sensible rebuttal to any of Mackie’s statements. If you’re gonna attack someone’s pov, you should make sure you understand it so you’re able to actually address the points made. I don’t think maybe you understand what he’s saying.

Frankly it’s hard not to be discouraged as I learn how much of the church today is practicing false teaching.

gotta love how you cherry pick Tim's teaching to fit what you want him to be saying.... shame on you

I dont understand where this theology even came from. It doesnt make any sense. If you dont want a relationship with God, you wish to be separate from your creator. That is what hell is, but the concept that it would be a place of mercy... What kind of mercy is sending someone away from their creator? That is wrath. That... well at the end of the day is justice. But it isnt mercy. The mercy is allowing a *lack* of separation, if one chooses.

Up until about 500 A.D., Christian beliefs about hell were reasonable and beautiful. The prevailing view then was that hell (the lake of fire, actually) not only punished but also purified the unrighteous. It was temporary -- each person's finite punishment would fit their finite crimes (sins). (The Greek speaking early church fathers knew that _aionios, _ the Greek word that is mistranslated as "eternal" in most English Bibles, doesn't mean "eternal.") Once a person's punishment and purification were complete, he or she would go to heaven. Everyone would eventually make it into heaven and be blessed, with heavenly rewards varying by person, based on the lives they led.

I mean there is a tradition that states that hell is the state of the soul under the dominion of sin. Even Dante argues that in Hell, your punishment is that you get exactly what it is you wanted in life, as opposed to what you needed, but the illusions that made that thing attractive are stripped away and the condemned now see it for what it really is.

That’s not what he is saying. He is saying our modern interpretation of hell is a man made concept and entirely unbiblical. Which is TRUE because “hell” in the KJV translation is NOT the same thing as the lake of fire. Be careful not to slander people willy nilly. Remember that the pharisees accused Jesus of being a false teacher!

In my opinion I believe in context with what Tim Mackie is saying, is a place we put our selves in (essentially hell on earth). For instance if you don't forgive someone and hold a grudge that grudge isn't eating the other person it's eating you up. You are making your own eternal hell. Unforgiveness breeds hate and anger which gives the enemy a foot hold to extract Hell on earth in you. That's why God wanted us to forgive so we can live in peace and connect with him. You can't be angry and jealous if you want to truly know the heart of God. Once you forgive and let go God will comfort you in that pain. Do I believe if you die and don't repent your spirit will go to hell? Possibly but we don't know. It's all a mystery to us. Only God holds that key. Our focus shouldn't be on Hell but on God's 💕.

Convinced there’s a hell? Take a look at these verses showing *the unsaved will perish:* they’ll be destroyed and not “be” anymore:
■ “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16)
■ “For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be: yea, thou shalt diligently consider his place, and it shall not be.” (Psalm 37:10)
■ “When the wicked spring as the grass, and when all the workers of iniquity do flourish; it is that they shall be destroyed for ever” (Psalms 92:7)
■ “As the whirlwind passeth, so is the wicked no more: but the righteous is an everlasting foundation” (Proverbs 10:25).
■ “Knowest thou not this of old, since man was placed upon earth, That the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment? Though his excellency mount up to the heavens, and his head reach unto the clouds; Yet he shall perish for ever like his own dung: they which have seen him shall say, Where is he?” (Job 20:4-7).
■ “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23)
■ “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” (2 Peter 3:9)

There’s nothing in those verses about eternal life in torment.

So on one hand we have verses showing the unsaved perish: after destruction they will not “be.” But on the other hand we have Bible translations with verses about hell and everlasting punishment.

What’s going on? Long, long ago the pagan doctines of immortal soul and eternal torment in hell crept into church doctrine. Translators from those churches then wrote “hell” into the Bible by mis-translating several Greek words. For example:
■ “And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire” (Mark 9:47, KJV)

“Hell” in that verse is from the Greek word γεέννῃ or “gehenna, ” the dump outside Jerusalem. The trash and garbage thrown there was sure to be destroyed by the constant fire —“hell fire”— and worms (maggots) in the dump. Jesus was only saying that just as trash thrown into the dump was sure to be destroyed, the wicked would surely be destroyed. They would perish and never again “be” as we saw earlier.

Here’s another verse where “hell” is from the Greek word γεέννῃ or “gehenna”:
■ “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” (Matthew 10:28)

Wait a minute . . . how can a soul be destroyed if it’s immortal? Was Jesus wrong? Of course not. In pagan Greek philosophy the soul was an immortal spiritual component of a person that separates from the body at death and keeps on living, forever. But in the Bible, soul refers to a person, to the self, the life —not to some sort of immortal component. For example:
■ “And we were in all in the ship two hundred threescore and sixteen souls.” (Acts 27:37)
■ “The soul that sinneth, it shall die . . .” (Ezeliel 18:20).

Compare that to the “soul” according to pagan Greek religion:
_“Do we believe that there is such a thing as death? And is this anything but the separation of soul and body? And being dead is the attainment of this separation; when the soul exists in herself, and is parted from the body and the body is parted from the soul . . . beyond question the soul is immortal and imperishable, and our souls will truly exist in another world!”_ (Plato, in _Phaedo, _ about 360 BC)

What you just read sounds just like what you’ll hear in most churches today. Can you now see what has happened? Over the centuries pagan Greek religion has crept into church doctrine!
Along with the immortal soul came hell, as a necessary explanation for where the unsaved immortal soul spends eternity!

And what happens now, today, when people see “hell” in the Bible? They naturally conclude “Oh, so we must have immortal souls” —and the pagan doctrines live on.

Did you know some later translators recognized the error of “hell” in the Bible translations? Young's Literal Tranlsation (YLT), for example, never uses “hell."

The “immortal soul” has roots in Satan’s original lie:
■ “And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die” (Genesis 3:4)

Salvation is NOT about “where you’ll spend eternity.” *You won’t even **_have_** an eternity unless you receive from God the gift of eternal life!* Otherwise you’ll perish and no longer “be” as we saw earlier.

So, what really happens to the unsaved? How do they perish? The apostle Paul wrote:
■ “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23)

After resurrection and judgment the unsaved die again. It’s called “the second death” in the Bible, in Revelation 2:11, 20:6, 20:14 and 21:8. After the second death there is no life and no hope of resurrection. It’s the end of that person; they will never again “be.” That’s what it means to *_perish._*

This second death is the “everlasting punishment” Jesus spoke of in Matthew 25:46:
■ “And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.”(Matthew 25:46)

The punishment —the second death— is everlasting in this respect: it is finished, permanent and irrevocable, like the execution of a criminal. It is not perpetual, ongoing punishing.

You didn't *_really_* think the God of mercy would be a sadistic monster, endlessly subjecting the unsaved to hopeless torment, did you?

Tim Mackie has many degrees in Hebrew literature and text. I think he knows what he’s talking about.
