Sniping for Osmiridium finding Tasmania's hidden treasure!!

In this video we head into an old mining village called 19 mile creek to snipe for the hidden treasure osmiridium. At the turn of the 20th century osmiridium was going up in value dramatically due to the rise of its value for the tips of fountain pens worldwide. Osmiridium had been discovered by old prospectors as early as 1870s when miners were prospecting gold on the tributaries of the pieman river.
Tasmania was the largest supplier alongside Russia and a rush took place in 19 mile creek a tributary of savage river. Join me as I retrace the footsteps of the early miners and try my luck prospecting a little osmiridium for myself.

That was awesome Levi! Osmiridium is actually an alloy of two platinum group metals. There are six metals in this family of "sisters." Osmium is one and iridium the other in this natural alloy. Osmium when heated in air will oxidize rather quickly, and form scales on your eyes. Of the six platinum group metals osmium is the most reactive. Because of this it is the least expensive of the six. The six elements in order of rarity are palladium, platinum, iridium, osmium, ruthenium, and the rarest of all is rhodium. Old platinum rings often had 10% iridium added to it to harden the platinum; they say. I however believe they put it in there because of cost. Course i'm skeptical about everything anymore. I've dealt with all the PGM's in assays except osmiridium. One thing i noticed and you mentioned was the orange colored pieces. I have some thoughts on that also. Almost always when you find one, you'll find them all. As natural alloys of all the metals are frequently found throughout the world they form different colors. One found in Mexico was a gold and rhodium alloy imparting a purple tinge to the gold. Anyway have always been fascinated with the PGM's. Be safe hope to see you next week.🙂

What you are doing is so important, you're keeping alive our history and doing something a lot of us can no longer do or would never do. Must be so satisfying to rediscover our history and at the same time you're a kid again 😎

!!Nice!! So try this mate. I'm in the California motherland and heaps and heaps and piles black sand it's standard. My little trick is to put it in the bottom of a vial and then take your snuffer bottle full of water and gently but firmly wash the black sand up and out of the vial. You can use the tip of the vial to stir and get virtually all of it out of there. Sometimes micro flakes will float up also but do it over a pan and just suck them up. Works great and is really pretty quick. Thanks for the videos they're really cool and so is the area that you're in. Almost like a prehistoric rainforest! How cool is that!!
