Gig workers split on who's to blame for Seattle's 'PayUp' law not working

Gig workers in favor of Seattle’s new "PayUp" legislation gathered to show their support for the new law on Thursday.

The law requires companies to pay app-based delivery drivers more, but in the weeks since taking effect, many feel as though it has backfired.

Both sides appear to agree that the app-based delivery model is not working. Where they disagree is on who’s to blame.

Restaurants don't like it, drivers don't like it, customers don't like it and the app company don't like it. Sounds like yet another great idea from the Seattle city council.

Why pay the extra fees imposed by the City when I can just walk 15 minutes to pick up my own food?

They're blaming the the delivery companies when they should be blaming the city council

Why don’t you protest before it becomes law? Perhaps you realized it backfired you now.

i tried reordering the same food on Uber eats. In November it was $73, now it's $93. Why do I gotta pay $20 more for the same order? Now I just cook at home.

Anyone who knows basic economics saw this coming when it was first proposed. These people got what they voted for. What are they complaining about?

Seattle has become one of the worst cities in the country. I grew up here, 58 years old. I avoid Seattle and won’t spend a dime in that city! I owned a rental in Seattle and sold it. No thanks. Washington is going down the drain fast!

I used to order door dash twice a week. Sometimes more. I always tipped well.

I deleted my app.

The city council members spearheaded this unnecessary stupid fee are no longer there.
Herbold and Lewis. Maybe if the economy was producing higher wage jobs and inflation wasn’t skyhigh the extra fee wouldn’t be such a big deal. Not to mention all of the taxes they attached to gasoline for our cars.

Low quality jobs shouldn't be paying more than a job that requires a college degree. The term replaceable is not in their vocabulary.

There are a lot of skilled workers like CNA's, hospital medical billers and administrative workers who are only making 19 to 21 dollars per hour. Most of these workers have college degrees and many years of experience. Gig work like food delivery is supposed to be an easy, no skills required, entry level job. They have not earned the right to make $26.65 an hour; especially at the expense of those skilled workers who make several dollars an hour less. If they want higher pay, get better jobs. Customers stand up against this unfair one sided ordinance.

The value of labor to pick up food from point A and deliver it to point B is not worth $26.00 per hour. Sad reality.

Seattle resident here - I haven't ordered a single delivery order since this BS started. I refuse to order anything for delivery on the normal apps until it is revoked.

Why would Uber Eats or Door Dash pay anyone more? If you don't like what they're offering, then don't work for them and get a real job. As simple as that.

Order directly to the restaurant no need apps

"No Free Labor"? Well, it's now "NO LABOR."

From my observation the delivery customer base is heavy lower income young people. A 30$ burger and fries isn’t gonna work, no fixing that law.

Orders have dried. Yep, that’s what happens when government tries to mandate private business policies.

Let the free matket handle it. If the delivery is too high people wont use the app. If the pay is too low they will lose drivers. Delivery jobs were never meant to pay all your skyhigh bills. That btw are also high because of bad policy and money printing.

Those gig workers are so annoying and entitled

Wow. That's a whole lot more than I made per hour as a resident physician.
