Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) is the author of works such as A Room of One's Own, Mrs Dalloway, To the Lighthouse, The Waves, and Orlando.

Kew Gardens was first published privately in 1919, then publicly in the collection Monday or Tuesday (1921), and subsequently in A Haunted House (1944). The story follows numerous people as they pass by a flower bed, describing their varying relationships, memories, and feelings, as a snail slowly makes its way over the soil.
